Their natural diet makes them particularly effective at tackling troublesome species in difficult terrain where machines and crews can struggle to operate safely.

The goats first arrived at Erindale Park and O’Connor Park before the program expanded this year to include Hewick Meadows, Totoredaca Park and King’s Park.

In total, the grazing program now targets invasive species across 1.2 hectares of wetlands, woodlands and grasslands.

City officials say the program offers a more environmentally friendly approach to invasive species management by reducing herbicide use while also preventing the spread of seeds that can happen during traditional plant removal.

But beyond the environmental benefits, the goats have also become unlikely local celebrities.

Residents have flocked to parks to watch the animals at work, turning the grazing sites into impromptu educational opportunities about invasive species and ecosystem protection. The unusual sight of goats chewing through dense brush has sparked widespread interest online and helped raise awareness about the city’s conservation efforts.

The city says the program’s success has already inspired interest from other municipalities and conservation groups looking for alternative ways to manage invasive plants.

Mississauga residents won’t have to wait long for another visit from the city’s furry groundskeepers.

The goats are expected to return in 2026 and 2027, including an appearance at Mississauga’s Invasive Species Awareness Fair on May 30 at Erindale Park.

INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Last 30 Days: 55,630 Votes

All Time: 1,339,974 Votes

    3953 VOTES
Do you plan to visit Dunkin’ Donuts when it reopens in Canada?

WIN A $100 GIFT CARD

Subscribe to INsauga’s daily email newsletter for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

A herd of hungry goats has helped put the City of Mississauga on the map for conservation innovation.…

[194297
49,48,55405
post-667647","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mississauga","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-mississauga
["GET
