{"id":669484,"date":"2026-05-14T18:40:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/669484\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T18:40:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:40:07","slug":"another-whale-was-spotted-near-a-popular-vancouver-park-daily-hive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/669484\/","title":{"rendered":"Another whale was spotted near a popular Vancouver park | Daily Hive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whale sightings in Vancouver seem to be happening on almost a daily basis, and in areas that we aren\u2019t too used to seeing them in.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Hive obtained footage of another whale sighting from Vancouver resident (<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/author\/beth_rochester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">and Daily Hive alumna<\/a>) Beth Rochester, this time near Vanier Park and English Bay, earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">So many whale spottings in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Vancouver?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#Vancouver<\/a> lately. This one was near Vanier Park.<\/p>\n<p>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BethRochester24?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@BethRochester24<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sTVbzp18Er\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/sTVbzp18Er<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amir Ali \u2328\ufe0f\u2615\ufe0f\ud83c\udff4\u200d\u2620\ufe0f (@AmirsDoingItAll) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmirsDoingItAll\/status\/2054609299536789915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 13, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rochester said that at the time she spotted the whale, it had been around for about 30 minutes, \u201cloosely breaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been lots of posts on social media about whale sightings in Vancouver, including a couple we\u2019ve covered, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/vancouver-orcas-seawall-display\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pod of orcas<\/a> by the Lions Gate Bridge, and a grey whale that was spotted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/vancouver-grey-whale-sightings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">few Vancouver spots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rochester\u2019s sighting appears to be of another grey whale, and the presence of that species of whale in and around Vancouver isn\u2019t necessarily a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Hive <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/vancouver-whale-sightings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recently spoke<\/a> to Andrew Trites, a UBC professor and the director of the marine mammal research unit, about the seeming spike in whale sightings.<\/p>\n<p>Trite said that both humpback and grey whales migrate from southern waters up north for summer feeding. While he said it\u2019s normal, he also said this is part of the \u2018new normal.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>For grey whales, however, their sudden presence in local waters may be a sign of desperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of those whales are starving, and some of them are stopping to feed,\u201d Trite said. \u201cIt\u2019s unusual.
