Edmonton Oilers<\/a> general manager Stan Bowman says he shares some of the blame for the team\u2019s lacklustre performance this season that led to the dismissal of head coach Kris Knoblauch<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n

But the team is in the business of winning, and he felt a different voice behind the bench might get a better result.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re (management) definitely part to blame for where we are today, I\u2019m not trying to hide from that,\u201d Bowman told a media conference call Thursday after Knoblauch\u2019s firing was announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a team doesn\u2019t have success there\u2019s usually multiple reasons. It\u2019s typically not just the coach or just the players or just the management.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a team with players who didn\u2019t perform the way they should. We had players who I brought in who didn\u2019t perform to the level we expected them to so that\u2019s on myself. There\u2019s blame to be had by all of us, myself included.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bowman said during the year-end assessment of the entire season, the discussion came around to \u201cwhere are we at now and do we have the belief that maybe a different voice would be able to tap into the players who we have to a different degree and get us to a different level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Kris came into the Oilers, he was the perfect coach at that time, he was exactly what that group needed to take them to almost the Stanley Cup \u2026 but as time passes things change.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what worked one year, or a couple of years, if it doesn\u2019t continue to work and that\u2019s where we are, in the results business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Knoblauch was fired before his three-year contract extension was set to kick in next season and the Oilers are obligated to pay him unless he is hired by another team.<\/p>\n

Assistant coach Mark Stuart was also fired.<\/p>\n

Bowman wouldn\u2019t get into a discussion about reports the team had asked for permission to speak to Bruce Cassidy, under contract to the Vegas Golden Knights, saying only that he wasn\u2019t able to inform Knoblauch of his dismissal until Wednesday evening because he wanted to do it in person and that was the earliest the two could meet.<\/p>\n

He said the Oilers will conduct a \u201cwide search\u201d for a new head coach \u2014 the seventh in the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl era \u2014 who they believe will maximize the talents of the players.<\/p>\n

Bowman said the team had \u201cno foundational piece\u201d this past year and \u201cthat\u2019s more a coaching thing,\u201d but said there were no difference of opinion between himself and Knoblauch that was an issue.<\/p>\n

Knoblauch, who coached McDavid as a junior with the Ontario Hockey League\u2019s Erie Otters, was hired in November 2023 and had a 135-77-21 regular-season record with the Oilers and a 31-22 playoff record.<\/p>\n

Knoblauch had guided the Oilers to the Stanley Cup final the previous two seasons but this year the team was unable to reproduce a similar result.<\/p>\n

Even with the elite level performances of McDavid, Draisaitl and defenceman Evan Bouchard the Oilers struggled to gain any momentum all season, managing to win at least three consecutive games only twice.<\/p>\n

They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Anaheim Ducks.<\/p>\n

McDavid called the Oilers \u201can average team\u201d after the loss, and Draisaitl said the team is going backwards and needs to make drastic improvements around McDavid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn what world do you have the best player in the world on your team and you\u2019re not looking to win?\u201d Draisaitl said. \u201cI know we\u2019re looking to win, but we need to be better \u2014 we have to be better. There\u2019s no way around it. We have to improve.<\/p>\n

\u201c(McDavid\u2019s) signed for two more years, and God knows where that goes, but we have two years here right now. We have to get significantly better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oilers management is feeling the pressure to produce a Stanley Cup victory before McDavid\u2019s two-year contract extension \u2014 signed with very team-friendly terms \u2014 expires after the 2027-28 season.<\/p>\n

Bowman himself has been criticized for several of his moves in the past year. He traded Edmonton-born goaltender Stuart Skinner and steady defenceman Brent Kulak to Pittsburgh Penguins for goalie Tristan Jarry in a deal that flopped.<\/p>\n

Bowman signed Trent Frederic to an eight-year $30.8 million extension and the forward was another major disappointment on a team that struggled with goaltending and defensive deficiencies all season.<\/p>\n
