{"id":670102,"date":"2026-05-15T01:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T01:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/670102\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T01:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T01:04:16","slug":"u-s-says-dozens-of-illegal-guns-trafficked-from-new-hampshire-into-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/670102\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. says dozens of illegal guns trafficked from New Hampshire into Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. prosecutors said Thursday they have dismantled an international <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/gun-trafficking\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">firearms trafficking<\/a> operation that allegedly funnelled dozens of illegally-obtained guns from <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/new-hampshire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Hampshire<\/a> into Canada, where many of the smuggled weapons were later found at crime scenes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Erin Creegan, the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Hampshire, said five defendants have pleaded guilty and eight others have been charged with federal firearms offences in relation to the alleged scheme, which prosecutors say occurred between the summer of 2021 through \u201cat least\u201d October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendants allegedly treated the northern border as a pipeline for illegal gun trafficking,\u201d Creegan said in a statement. \u201cIt is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations said investigators have identified approximately 51 firearms potentially trafficked into Canada through Vermont and the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation in New York, where all eight additional defendants charged in the grand jury indictment are residents.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral\u201d of those weapons were subsequently recovered at various violent crime scenes in Canada, investigators said, including a kidnapping and attempted murder investigation in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, the Akwesasne Mohawk defendants allegedly enlisted a Vermont man, Justin Jackson, to purchase firearms on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson was legally prohibited from purchasing firearms, however, so he tasked three others \u2014 Melissa Longe, Dustin Tuttle and Caleb Wilcott \u2014 to obtain the weapons from licensed firearm dealers in New Hampshire and elsewhere in the region.<\/p>\n<p>All four of those individuals have pleaded guilty to straw purchasing of firearms, which carries a maximum prison term of 25 years, and firearm trafficking and possession charges.<\/p>\n<p>A fifth person, Doug Mulligan of Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. All eight are charged with straw purchasing and firearms trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The indictment says the Canada-U.S. border region near the Akwesasne reservation, which also covers Cornwall Island in Ontario and Saint Regis Mohawk tribal lands in Quebec, \u201cis a known smuggling corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrugs, guns, and people are smuggled through the Akwesasne reservation utilizing Cornwall Island which is part of the Akwesasne reservation,\u201d the indictment says.<\/p>\n<p>The ATF and Homeland Security worked with the Canada Border Services Agency, Ontario Provincial Police, S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police and Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian agencies said they regularly share intelligence with U.S. authorities to disrupt cross-border criminal networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investigation highlights the value of integrated enforcement teams and strong international partnerships,\u201d Ontario Provincial Police Chief Supt. CBSA resources were also allocated to joint teams involved in the case, including Quebec\u2019s firearms trafficking and tracing teams.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Crime<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca\/security-securite\/seizure-saisie-eng.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBSA data says<\/a> 852 firearms were seized at the U.S. border in the past fiscal year, down slightly from 942 the year before.<\/p>\n<p>However, the number of firearms seized by CBSA during a search warrant executed within Canada \u2014 335 \u2014 shot up from 96 in the 2024-25 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. authorities have been scrutinizing criminal activity at the Canadian border since U.S. President Donald Trump was re-elected in 2024.
