A broken window can be seen at 145 Powers St. following a fire inside of a suite at the Manitoba Housing building on Thursday. One resident says the entire building smelled of smoke and fire as a result of the blaze.<\/p>\n
Hearing about the blaze upon her return from a volunteer shift, Sharon Markwell, said the entire building smelled like smoke and fire when she got home.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first thing I thought about was my pets, of course,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The fire caused extensive damage to the apartment.<\/p>\n
Markwell, who has lived at the block for almost 13 years, said she\u2019s thankful fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the suite. She lives just above where the fire happened. She didn\u2019t have to evacuate.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so glad they got it contained,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m just beyond grateful that they were able to save the building, because where am I going to go?\u201d<\/p>\n
The Free Press recently reported about safety problems at the building that triggered a pause on home care visits from Winnipeg Regional Health Authority staff.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, numerous doors inside the building were boarded up.<\/p>\n

A WFPS news release reported a fire in a suite on April 28.<\/p>\n
