{"id":672331,"date":"2026-05-16T00:51:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T00:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/672331\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T00:51:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T00:51:13","slug":"energy-gels-heres-what-runners-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/672331\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy gels: here\u2019s what runners need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sebastian Sawe ripped open a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/apr\/26\/bread-and-honey-london-marathon-sabastian-sawe-world-record-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbohydrate gel sachet<\/a> and slurped it five minutes before the start of the 2026 London Marathon. Sixty minutes later, he inhaled another one before smashing through the two-hour marathon barrier. <\/p>\n<p>Sawe might have been the first sub-two-hour marathon runner, but he\u2019s certainly not the first to be powered by an energy gel. It\u2019s estimated that over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketreportsworld.com\/market-reports\/energy-gel-products-market-14722317\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">70% of marathon runners use gels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Long before energy gels were a thing, endurance athletes used all sorts of foods to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/health\/nutrition\/transformation-marathon-fueling\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fuel their athletic feats<\/a> \u2013 from <a href=\"https:\/\/dopagedemondenard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/LA-SAGA-du-contenu-de-la-musette.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sugar lumps and coffee, to chocolate, beer<\/a>, wine and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/news\/the-strange-case-of-the-st-louis-1904-marathon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">egg whites and brandy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But from the 1970s scientists caught up with athletic practice. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1152\/jappl.1974.37.5.679?journalCode=jappl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research demonstrated<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1748-1716.1967.tb03720.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbohydrates<\/a> were effective in fuelling <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1152\/jappl.1986.61.1.165?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&amp;url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prolonged endurance exercise<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-msse\/fulltext\/2008\/02000\/superior_endurance_performance_with_ingestion_of.12.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foods containing glucose and fructose<\/a> (forms of sugar) proving to be the most effective fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to decades of research, athletes today can use energy gels to provide fuel. These are precise, scientifically-calibrated carbohydrates in the form of maltodextrin and fructose blends encapsulated in a hydrogel. <\/p>\n<p>But while these modern gels promise fast energy and improved performance, not all scientists are convinced they live up to the hype \u2013 and for many athletes, they come with uncomfortable side-effects. <\/p>\n<p>So are gels really worth it, or should athletes stick to simpler, if less glamorous, sources of fuel?<\/p>\n<p>Fuelling with energy gels<\/p>\n<p>When we eat a meal, our bodies steadily breakdown the carbohydrates from food in the stomach. These carbohydrates are then gradually turned into glucose (simple sugar) in the blood. <\/p>\n<p>Glucose is typically then transported to the muscles and liver where it\u2019s stored as glycogen. This makes it easy for the body to access the stored energy when needed. <\/p>\n<p>But our glycogen stores only <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1748-1716.1967.tb03720.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last around 90 minutes<\/a> before being depleted. Once it runs out, it can affect your performance. So many endurance athletes need to reach for carbs during long races and training runs to ensure they don\u2019t run critically low on fuel. <\/p>\n<p>In practical terms, energy gels offer a fast, convenient and concentrated source of carbohydrates that can be consumed mid-race without slowing down. Compared with whole foods, they\u2019re easier to digest and more precisely dosed, helping runners maintain a steady energy supply. <\/p>\n<p>However, this convenience comes at a cost. Gels can be expensive, some athletes find them unpalatable and they\u2019re often associated with gastrointestinal discomfort \u2013 especially when taken in large amounts or without sufficient water. <\/p>\n<p>Simpler options such as sports drinks or sugary foods may deliver similar energy, but typically lack the portability and precision that gels provide.<\/p>\n<p>Research also shows there\u2019s a lot of variation between available products. A survey of 31 gel product ranges (51 flavours total) across 23 brands found extreme variation in serving size, carbohydrate content, free sugars and especially <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsnem\/25\/5\/article-p504.xml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">osmolality<\/a> (how concentrated a solution is). This has implications for how and when you should use gels and the effects they might have on your body. <\/p>\n<p>Gels also may not really offer any additional benefits over other products, such as sports drinks.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-msse\/fulltext\/2010\/11000\/cho_oxidation_from_a_cho_gel_compared_with_a_drink.10.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2010 study<\/a> found that gels and drinks deliver carbohydrates to the muscle at the same rate. This was later supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/japplphysiol.00091.2022\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022 study<\/a> which found drinks, gels and chews ingested were also no different in the benefits they conferred. <\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman wearing a hat and athletic gear slurps down an energy gel on a sunny day in the desert.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/file-20260514-57-kputa0.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Gels can be a convenient way to fuel.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/pretty-young-woman-biting-on-energy-2361414817?trackingId=6209ccee-0b9a-472a-8833-28257624a27e&amp;listId=searchResults\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frantic00\/ Shutterstock<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The only real advantage of using gels is their convenience, as they can be easily stored and consumed mid-run.<\/p>\n<p>Gels may also have downsides. The most commonly reported issue is gastrointestinal distress, affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsnem\/19\/5\/article-p485.xml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">around 10-20% of people<\/a> according to one study.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogel drinks and products form gels in the stomach. The idea is that by encapsulating carbohydrates it helps to reduce the amount of water that crosses the intestinal barrier. This is supposed to prevent bloating and cramps. It\u2019s also claimed that this enables more effective transport of carbs into the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<p>But studies have not consistently shown better performance or less gastrointestinal distress <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsnem\/30\/5\/article-p305.xml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compared with standard carbohydrates<\/a>, even when calories are matched. <\/p>\n<p>Concentrated gels make their way to small intestine but their sugar concentration is higher than surrounding blood and tissue so water is pulled into the gut. This may be why gels cause bloating and cramps if you don\u2019t drink water alongside them.<\/p>\n<p>How to use gels effectively<\/p>\n<p>If your run is under 60 minutes, you probably don\u2019t need gels. <\/p>\n<p>If your run is 60-90 minutes or more, fuel before you feel empty. Aim for around 30-60g of carbs per hour.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t feel hungry, taking on small, regular amounts of carbohydrate \u2013 for example a few sips or a partial gel every 15\u201320 minutes \u2013 can help maintain energy levels before fatigue sets in<\/p>\n<p>For very long races, you should aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9734239\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">around 60-90g of carbs<\/a> per hour. A mix of glucose and fructose appears to be most useful when intensity is high.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing is to test gels while training. Don\u2019t use them for the first time on race day. This is to ensure your body can tolerate them and you know whether they effectively benefit your performance or not.<\/p>\n<p>A small proportion of runners are much more prone to gastrointestinal issues, so if you experience this switching brands can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>But if you find gels bother you no matter what, you could always reach for some of the foods endurance athletes used before gels were ever a thing \u2013 such as bread, fruit, sugar lumps, bananas, dates and rice cakes.
