{"id":672383,"date":"2026-05-16T01:27:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/672383\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T01:27:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:27:15","slug":"antiquated-bridge-hampering-exports-groups-urge-carney-to-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/672383\/","title":{"rendered":"Antiquated bridge hampering exports, groups urge Carney to act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINNIPEG \u2014 More than 20 groups, representing farmers, fertilizer companies and shippers, are urging prime minister Mark Carney to take action on a railway bridge in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>A letter to Carney and transportation minister Steve MacKinnon says the Second Narrows Rail Bridge is a critical artery for Canada\u2019s export economy. Any sort of accident or mechanical problem in the future could shut down the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>That would \u201cimmediately halt bulk exports\u201d of grain, fertilizer and other products, the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe (lift) bridge malfunctioned in late February and was unable to be raised, halting marine traffic and restricting rail service for four days,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to address these infrastructure vulnerabilities will reinforce perceptions of Canada as an unreliable trading partner, with serious implications for investment, market access and the long-term strength of our export-driven economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organizations behind the letter, sent the second week of May, include the <a href=\"https:\/\/cfa-fca.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canadian Federation of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cfa-fca.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Agriculture<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccga.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canadian Canola Growers <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccga.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Association<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/saskwheat.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sask <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/saskwheat.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wheat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/soycanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Soy Canada<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fertilizercanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fertilizer <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fertilizercanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    Read Also<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/machinery\/image-collecting-ai-field-robot-coming-to-canada-in-2027\/\" data-click=\"gfm-click-tracking\" data-module-id=\"ARTICLE_SNEAK_PEAK\" data-module-name=\"Read Also\" data-module-location=\"Inside Content\" data-page-type=\"Single Page\" class=\"tw:shrink-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"winter-article-sneak-peak--image tw:w-32 tw:h-24 tw:shrink-0 lazyload\" width=\"128\" height=\"96\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/300994_web1_twp_jme_terraclear-robot-with-boom_tc-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"An aerial view of a TerraClear Robot sprayer with a 60 foot boom.\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 128px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 128\/96;\"\/><br \/>\n            <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"tw:text-base tw:font-normal tw:text-neutral-950 tw:m-0\">The rail bridge, owned by Canadian National Railway, is the only way for trains to access the North Shore grain, potash and coal terminals at Vancouver\u2019s port.<\/p>\n<p>It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/markets\/aging-bridge-threatens-vancouver-ports-efficiency-gains\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broken for several days<\/a> in late February, locked in its down position.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge carries almost one-third of all cargo that annually moves through the port \u2014 43.7 million tonnes in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The terminals on the North Shore include G3, Richardson and Cargill for grain, and the Canpotex potash facility.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portvancouver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Port of Vancouver<\/a> has invested in a system to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/news\/vancouver-port-says-it-has-improved-efficiency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">optimize traffic<\/a>, co-ordinating rail and shipping, in the busy waters around the Second Narrows Railway bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portvancouver.com\/project\/active-vessel-traffic-management-avtm-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Active Vessel Traffic Management<\/a> (AVTM) program has increased the volume of traffic, in and out of the North Shore, CN said in a 2025 press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince AVTM was implemented, we have increased the average weekly train count moving to\/from North Vancouver by 10 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those improvements may be making a difference at the moment, but Canada\u2019s export industries need a long-term solution to this bridge, which was built in 1969 and wasn\u2019t designed for modern freight traffic, the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVessel traffic requiring the bridge to lift is only expected to grow\u2026.
