Carl Corbel is director of operations with the infrastructure division of Caisse de d\u00e9p\u00f4t et placement du Qu\u00e9bec, the province\u2019s public pension fund manager and owner of the REM.<\/p>\n
He says passengers in the West Island \u2014 a region known for inadequate public transit \u2014 will be able to travel from the Anse-\u00e0-l\u2019Orme station to downtown Montreal in 35 minutes. <\/p>\n
The segment was initially scheduled to go into service at the end of 2024. The deadline was pushed back twice, first to fall 2025 then spring 2026.<\/p>\n
The final section of the REM linking to Montr\u00e9al Trudeau International Airport is expected to open by the end of 2027. <\/p>\n
In the meantime, the A\u00e9roports de Montr\u00e9al says it will fund a shuttle service linking the Des Sources station to the airport, which it expects to launch mid-June.<\/p>\n
An agreement between the airport and the agency that plans, finances and organizes integrated transit in Greater Montreal \u2014 Autorit\u00e9 r\u00e9gionale de transport m\u00e9tropolitain \u2014 is being finalized. <\/p>\n
In October 2025, CDPQ Infra promised to open the airport station in 2027. Julien Hurel, vice-president of the REM project at CDPQ Infra, says there are \u201cno major challenges\u201d to meet that deadline.<\/p>\n
The REM\u2019s timelines have been delayed several times, and it has faced criticism over outages on the Brossard branch linking to Montreal\u2019s South Shore since it was launched.<\/p>\n
Hurel said many of these issues have been addressed since the REM was first inaugurated in 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have basically divided by two the number of breakdowns while we tripled the overall network,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n
When completed, the network will comprise 26 stations over 67 km of track across the greater Montreal area. <\/p>\n
