We should be happy about our Eurovision<\/a> act \u2014 even if the song isn\u2019t great. Look Mum No Computer<\/a> represented the UK in tonight\u2019s final with wacky entry ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei’.<\/p>\n

With his ridiculous lyrics, oddball dancers and strange dance moves, it was certainly eye-catching, and the crowd in the arena seemed to really love it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one of the most bonkers acts we\u2019ve ever sent to the annual contest. But we should all be pleased the lad (real name Sam Battle) agreed to do it.<\/p>\n

For years, the UK has had acts that unfortunately didn’t stick the landing. Singers like James Newman, Michael Rice and Mae Muller all did their best, and they did a nice job. But they seemingly weren\u2019t exciting enough to deliver a good result for the UK, with our most recent win still being Katrina and the Waves’ 1997 hit ‘Love Shine a Light’.<\/p>\n

In Eurovision, it\u2019s actually a good thing if you\u2019re terrible. The worst thing you can be is forgettable. That\u2019s where the UK keeps going wrong. We send acts that don\u2019t seem to stand out. A nice vocal and a pleasant song are not going to cut it.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got to make viewers feel something, anything. If they do, then some of them will pick up the phone and vote for you. If you\u2019re passable and boring, then you\u2019ll be forgotten and barely get any votes.<\/p>\n

Is Look Mum No Computer my kind of music? No. Would I ever choose to listen to his song? Definitely not. But does it stand out? Yes. Does it inspire some emotion? Yes.<\/p>\n

Sam has given it his all. He is fully committed to the fun and silliness of Eurovision. He hasn\u2019t taken himself too seriously. For all of that, he should be commended.<\/p>\n

It has never really mattered whether he wins this year\u2019s contest. With 25 countries in the final, there\u2019s a lot of competition.<\/p>\n

But what should excite everyone is that the UK is now willing to try something different. The team that picks our acts is up for taking a risk. This will almost certainly boost our chances of doing well or even winning in the next few years.<\/p>\n

Plenty of novelty songs have become fan favourites and done really well. Just look at the success of K\u00e4\u00e4rij\u00e4\u2019s ‘Cha Cha Cha’ and Baby Lasagna\u2019s ‘Rim Tim Tagi Dim’.<\/p>\n

It might not feel like it, but the UK is going in the right direction.<\/p>\n
