{"id":67460,"date":"2025-08-13T21:49:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T21:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/67460\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T21:49:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T21:49:18","slug":"starlink-replaces-free-pause-mode-with-5-monthly-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/67460\/","title":{"rendered":"Starlink Replaces Free Pause Mode With $5 Monthly Charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SpaceX is terminating a free feature for Starlink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/starlink-rv-rebrands-as-starlink-roam-offers-global-access-for-200-per\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Roam<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/starlink-imposes-dramatic-speed-cap-for-those-on-priority-plans\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Priority<\/a> subscribers: The ability to pause their monthly service at no extra cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the company is adding a $5-per-month &#8220;standby mode.&#8221; SpaceX is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/komocode\/status\/1955536224514662673\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow\">sending emails<\/a> to customers who have used paused mode, telling them to opt in to standby mode or lose their paused service line. With standby mode, subscribers will receive \u201cunlimited low-speed data,\u201d keeping their dish connected throughout each month. However, internet speeds will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlink.com\/legal\/documents\/DOC-1470-99699-90?regionCode=US\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">capped<\/a> at 500kbps. The new policy is slated to take effect in 30 days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" class=\"\" data-image-loader=\"https:\/\/i.pcmag.com\/imagery\/articles\/06oFvfPKJ1dWaKO7juLWtHs-3.png\" data-lazy-sized=\"\" alt=\"Starlink notice\" data-image-path=\"articles\/06oFvfPKJ1dWaKO7juLWtHs-3.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    (Credit: Starlink)\n<\/p>\n<p>Although SpaceX is marketing standby mode as an \u201cupgrade,\u201d some customers view it as a rate hike, since the pause function had been free and it could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Starlink\/comments\/15a3413\/how_does_pausing_work_for_starlink_roam\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">halt<\/a> the next billing cycle. <\/p>\n<p>The move has irked Roam subscribers, many of whom use their Starlink dishes on the go, like on camping trips and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/spacex-to-integrate-starlink-directly-on-some-rvs\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RVs<\/a>.\u00a0Previously, Roam subscribers could freely pause their monthly internet service, which costs $165 per month or $50 per month for 50GB of data. Now they\u2019ll need to pay more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Looks like another rate hike, without calling it a rate hike. Now they get an extra $60\/year,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/177859700191023\/posts\/1462564905053823\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> one Starlink user on Facebook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only need the service for two months a year,&#8221; another user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kjetilk474\/status\/1955525195214754012\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow\">added<\/a> on X. &#8220;The dish is in storage the remaining ten months. Now I should pay for a service that I don\u2019t need or want? I will refuse.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" class=\"\" data-image-loader=\"https:\/\/i.pcmag.com\/imagery\/articles\/06oFvfPKJ1dWaKO7juLWtHs-2.png\" data-lazy-sized=\"\" alt=\"Starlink Mini\" data-image-path=\"articles\/06oFvfPKJ1dWaKO7juLWtHs-2.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    (Credit: Brian Westover\/PCMag)\n<\/p>\n<p>Many affected subscribers also purchased the $499 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/reviews\/starlink-mini\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Starlink Mini<\/a> dish, which is only available in the US with a Roam plan. One user on Reddit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Starlink\/comments\/1mowydy\/psa_miniroam10gpause_users_getting_screwed\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claims<\/a>, \u201cStarlink is pulling a classic bait-and-switch,\u201d after revoking the free pause feature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people bought the Mini on the premise that the pause feature effectively makes it pay as you go,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Starlink\/comments\/1mouqit\/looks_like_standby_mode_is_making_its_way_into\/n8f4zr9\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> a separate user. \u201cNow we have to pay a minimum of $60 a year just to own something we might not use??? How is this legal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change also begs the question: What\u2019s to stop a customer from simply letting their subscription lapse and re-subscribing later as a workaround for the lost free pause? But the company has updated a support page about the pause function, which suggests it won&#8217;t be charging reactivation fees for affected users. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recently upgraded pause to include Standby Mode. Previously, the pause feature offered zero data at no cost. If pausing with Standby Mode does not meet your needs, you are able to cancel at no cost and restart service on an available plan whenever you\u2019re ready,&#8221; the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlink.com\/support\/article\/37bb3b47-9525-7224-5f0a-6d016ce26975\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>        Recommended by Our Editors<\/p>\n<p>The policy change also comes as some Roam subscribers report losing access to Starlink&#8217;s $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/starlink-offers-10-per-month-plan-to-lure-back-inactive-users\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">10-per-month plan<\/a>, which gave them access to 10GB of data. <\/p>\n<p>Other users are welcoming the new standby mode, pointing to how the 500Kbps download and upload rate works for their basic internet needs. \u201cThis new $5 plan is actually pretty good. Totally unlimited anywhere anytime at 2g speeds. I can text, run my navigation equipment, webcams and even browse the internet all fine. Speed is about 0.6mbps,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Starlink\/comments\/1mowydy\/psa_miniroam10gpause_users_getting_screwed\/n8fzq23\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> one user on Reddit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Starlink support document notes that the company is keeping the free pause mode available in certain markets, including parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The same support document <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlink.com\/na\/support\/article\/37bb3b47-9525-7224-5f0a-6d016ce26975\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> the paid standby mode is available to subscribers on the Residential plan. But it adds: \u201cPausing with Standby Mode does not reserve your spot on a Residential plan. If your area is at capacity when you try to resume, you may not be able to reactivate your previous Residential plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like what you&#8217;re reading?
