Jonathan Osorio and Alonso Coello were partnered in midfield as usual with Derrick Etienne Jr., Malik Henry, Daniel Salloi and Emilio Aristizabal making up the attacking unit.

There was some rare positive news on the injury front in the second half, as Nicksoen Gomis replaced Edwards just before the hour mark for his first appearance in over a year as he recovered from a long-term Achilles injury.

Coello and Kerwin Vargas traded early long-distance shots in the first few minutes of a back-and-forth start to the match, and Toronto was repeatedly unleashing the pace and directness of Henry down the right side to put early pressure on the Charlotte defence.

Gilman got his head on the end of a cross to the back post on a corner kick in the 16th minute, but Kristijan Kahlina reacted quickly to catch the ball on the line. Vargas had another attempt at the other end of the pitch moments later but sent a cross-goal shot high over Gavran’s net without coming close to testing the TFC netminder.

Vargas set up the opening goal in the 19th minute, chipping a high cross into the box and overhitting it slightly, but finding Wilfried Zaha. Zaha, whose loan at Charlotte expires during the World Cup break, beat Gavran at his near post, finding the bottom left corner of the net.

Zaha was left off the Ivory Coast World Cup squad, but responded in a big way on the club’s first shot on target of the match.

Etienne Jr. wasn’t left off Haiti’s World Cup team, and showed exactly why three minutes after his team conceded, moving patiently along the edge of the penalty area before firing a powerful shot past Kahlina for his second MLS goal of the season.

“We broke from the right side, the ball found Oso [Jonathan Osorio] and he played me and I was in a 1v1 opportunity,” Etienne said after the match. “I was able to cut inside, there was no help defender and I was able to set my feet, get a good preparation touch and get a good shot on goal.

“I was glad I got a clean strike and yeah, you saw what happened.”

Gilman thought he gave Toronto the lead in the 27th minute when he headed home from a set piece, but referee Allen Chapman went to the monitor and spotted an alleged foul on Jonathan Osorio. Osorio didn’t appear to foul anyone, but was merely standing his ground when Idan Toklomati ran into the back of him and went to ground.

The goal was called off, and it proved to be costly when Charlotte found a second goal of their own eight minutes later. David Schnegg stepped into a long-distance shot and blasted it along the ground and into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 for the hosts instead.

Related Reading: Fraser livid with ‘magical and mystical’ officiating again in Toronto FC defeat to Charlotte

Moments later Gavran made his first save of the match, coming out of his net quickly to close down Zaha and get his body in front of the point blank shot.

A busy first half prompted seven minutes of stoppage time, where another big stop from Gavran to deny Vargas was the defining moment before Chapman blew his whistle for halftime.

Ten minutes after play resumed Schnegg called Gavran into action again with a snap shot at the near post, but the Toronto goalkeeper was able to slap it behind for a corner kick. Five minutes earlier, Aristizabal tested the goalkeeper with a long-distance shot that was stopped by Kahlina.

Salloi tried to play a lateral pass across the six yard box to Etienne Jr when the pair charged forward in the 71st minute, but Nathan Byrne got back to make a great lunging interception. His clearance hit Henry in front of goal and bounced out for a goal kick to relieve the pressure Charlotte had been facing.

Zaha hit the roof of the net as Charlotte looked for an insurance goal against a surging TFC, but it was because he missed a shot high from the left side of the net, unable to squeeze it under the crossbar.

Jonathan Osorio was judged to have fouled Morrison Agyemang in the box, sending Pep Biel to the penalty spot in the 84th minute, and the Spanish midfielder made no mistake to increase the hosts’ lead. Toronto was particularly upset by the call after Franklin was fouled in the Charlotte box earlier in the half without a call, or even a second look with the VAR monitor.

Toronto FC kept pushing to try and rescue a point as four minutes of stoppage time flashed onto the fourth official’s board, but Charlotte’s defenders held strong like they did for most of the game. Franklin had one last great opportunity in the 93rd minute when he volleyed a shot at Kahlina from close range, but the 2024 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year made another brilliant stop.

Toronto FC visit the Chicago Fire next Saturday for their final match before the World Cup break.
