It was then refreshed 24 hours later to add its \u201cSecure Boot release note.\u201d But the update was changed again on May 15, with a warning that this critical update may &#8220;<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/05\/16\/security-update-fails-microsoft-says-restart-windows\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/05\/16\/security-update-fails-microsoft-says-restart-windows\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"fail to install\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fail to install<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That gives Windows users a dilemma \u2014 given the need to ensure the update has been installed on PCs by June 1. Microsoft says the workaround for most users is likely a restart, albeit this will rollback the update. It\u2019s unclear what this means for Secure Boot certificates that are wrapped into the software download.<\/p>\n<p>There is a more nuanced Secure Boot warning in this week\u2019s update as well. \u201cWith this update,\u201d Microsoft says, \u201cWindows quality updates include additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/05\/16\/googles-android-upgrade-why-you-need-a-new-phone-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Google\u2019s Android Upgrade\u2014Why You Need A New Phone In 2026\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/05\/16\/googles-android-upgrade-why-you-need-a-new-phone-in-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesGoogle\u2019s Android Upgrade\u2014Why You Need A New Phone In 2026By Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not the clearest language for any worried users.
