If you\u2019ve recently visited a Winnipeg emergency room, chances are you waited far longer than anyone should in a modern healthcare system.<\/p>\n
And if you left frustrated, angry, or worried about a loved one, you are not alone.<\/p>\n
The numbers tell a story government officials can no longer downplay.<\/p>\n
Official Manitoba health statistics show the crisis inside Winnipeg emergency rooms has steadily worsened since 2020. The number of patients waiting in ERs for an inpatient bed \u2014 one of the biggest causes of overcrowding \u2014 averaged just five patients daily in 2020 across Winnipeg hospitals. That number climbed to 30 in 2021, 41 in 2022, and peaked at 54 in 2023. While there was some improvement in 2024 and 2025, the latest 2026 reporting week showed another spike, reaching 66 patients waiting for beds.<\/p>\n
Those are not people waiting for a routine appointment. Those are patients already admitted through emergency rooms but stuck in hallways, waiting rooms, or overcrowded treatment areas because there is nowhere else to place them.<\/p>\n
That backlog creates a domino effect. Ambulances cannot unload patients quickly. ER beds remain occupied. New patients wait longer. Staff become overwhelmed. And eventually, some patients simply give up and leave before receiving care.<\/p>\n
At Health Sciences Centre, the province\u2019s busiest emergency room, the number of patients leaving without being seen reportedly more than doubled between 2020 and 2025.<\/p>\n
That should concern every Manitoban.<\/p>\n
When people walk out of emergency rooms without treatment, it increases the risk of missed diagnoses, worsening medical conditions, and tragic outcomes that could have been prevented.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Manitobans continue hearing promises, announcements, listening tours, and strategies.<\/p>\n
But the public is still waiting for meaningful change.<\/p>\n
The reality is Canada\u2019s healthcare system is struggling under pressures it was never designed to handle \u2014 an aging population, mental health crises, addictions, staffing shortages, and years of delayed care following the pandemic.<\/p>\n
Adding more beds helps. Recruiting more nurses and doctors helps. Improving efficiency helps.<\/p>\n
But we also need to start asking difficult questions that politicians often avoid because they fear the political backlash.<\/p>\n
Why are countries with universal healthcare systems outperforming Canada on wait times?<\/p>\n
Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands all maintain universal healthcare coverage while allowing carefully regulated private healthcare options. In those countries, patients still receive publicly funded care, but private clinics and hospitals help absorb demand, expand capacity, and reduce pressure on emergency rooms and surgical waitlists.<\/p>\n
The result?<\/p>\n
Patients get faster access to specialists, shorter surgical waits, and better overall system performance.<\/p>\n
Canada, meanwhile, continues ranking near the bottom among comparable countries for wait times for surgeries, MRIs, and specialist care.<\/p>\n
That does not mean abandoning public healthcare.<\/p>\n
It means acknowledging that the current system is not meeting patients’ needs.<\/p>\n
A blended system \u2014 one that protects universal access while allowing private investment and additional healthcare delivery \u2014 may be worth serious consideration. Not ideology. Not political talking points. Practical solutions.<\/p>\n
If properly regulated, private clinics and hospitals could help reduce surgical backlogs, free up hospital space, and relieve pressure on emergency rooms without taking away universal care.<\/p>\n
Other countries are already proving it can work.<\/p>\n
The real question is whether Canadian politicians are willing to have an honest conversation about healthcare reform before wait times become even worse.<\/p>\n
Because right now, the people paying the price are patients.<\/p>\n
And they are tired of waiting.<\/p>\n
