Victoria artist shines a light on the ocean with crushed glass art<\/p>\n

The ocean is a source of inspiration for many artists in and around Victoria, including Barbara Morris, a crushed glass artist based in James Bay.<\/p>\n

Morris collects sea glass she finds on the beach and places them on a drawing board, making use of her creative imagination and artistry.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Victoria News, Morris recalled that her inspiration to create art was born at six years, when her mother was gardening and she was allowed to play with watercolours. She learnt to paint flowers that her mother planted.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Edmonton, she moved to Vancouver Island seven years ago.<\/p>\n

Morris takes regular strolls on the beach, being a lover of the ocean. She started collecting sea glass and eventually ended up with around 25 big containers full of the polished treasures.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can hold sea glass up through the sun, and it just shines so beautifully. So then I started using the crushed glass, and they are the same. If you put it into a glass frame and hang it in the window, it shines so beautifully,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n

When creating ocean waves through crushed glass or sea glass, she first picks an aqua green or a deep blue colour. For the bottom of the ocean, she would use brown glass while creating a wave using her hand or a stick, to make the waves as big as she wants them to be. Using more glass creates the depth of the waves, she explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cI use clear glass as well on the outside of the wave. Then once that\u2019s done, I\u2019ll take the seashells that I\u2019ve collected, and I\u2019ll place those as well onto the piece. So there\u2019s seashells maybe on the bottom that kind of reflect in the sand.\u201d<\/p>\n

She then finishes the work by pouring resin on the top.<\/p>\n

Although beautiful, working with crushed glass also has some safety concerns, especially when crushing them and putting them together. Morris said that she wears gloves when she works with sharp glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to wear a mask when you\u2019re mixing up the resin and then when you pour the resin. Also, that piece needs to be put somewhere to dry so that you\u2019re not inhaling the fumes from the resin. It\u2019s quite strong,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

As much as she is passionate about creating art, she is also passionate about sharing her passion for art with everyone. She has been teaching art for about 20 years now and has been carrying out classes in Victoria. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd once a month, I\u2019m out in a restaurant, Seahorse Cafe in Brentwood Bay. Teaching my crushed glass art is especially rewarding because it allows for endless creativity.
