The National Council for Reconciliation is seeking new board members from Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.<\/p>\n

The council \u2013 established last year under the\u00a0National Council for Reconciliation Act\u00a0in response to Call to Action 53<\/a> of the\u00a0Truth and Reconciliation Commission \u2013 is an independent Indigenous-led body mandated to \u201cmonitor, evaluate, and report on Canada\u2019s progress toward reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NWT\u2019s Mahalia Yakeleya Newmark was among the nine directors<\/a> on its inaugural board.<\/p>\n

In a public notice<\/a>, the council said it is accepting expressions of interest from individuals with experience in governance, public policy, Indigenous leadership, law, finance, education, research and community development.<\/p>\n

The appointments come as the council begins building its long-term governance structure and national oversight role.<\/p>\n

Under the legislation, the board will consist of between nine and 13 directors, with at least two-thirds required to be Indigenous, including representation from First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis communities.<\/p>\n

The council said appointments will also consider regional representation, lived experience and professional expertise connected to reconciliation work.<\/p>\n

According to the notice, directors will help guide the council\u2019s strategic direction and oversee governance and reporting on reconciliation efforts in Canada.<\/p>\n

The council is encouraging applications from residential school survivors and descendants, northern residents, youth, women and gender-diverse people. Applicants must be at least 18, not hold elected office, and be willing to undergo criminal record and bankruptcy checks.<\/p>\n

The volunteer positions require an estimated 15 to 20 days per year, with travel expenses reimbursed.<\/p>\n

To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, r\u00e9sum\u00e9, two letters of support and proof of residency via email<\/a>\u00a0by June 27 at 12:59am MT. More information about the council is available on the National Council for Reconciliation website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
