Ground stations log it daily.

Between orbiting sensors and surface monitors, the assumption was that scientists had a reasonably clear picture of which regions emit how much. They didn’t.

A closer look read the molecular fingerprints baked into methane itself rather than just measuring concentrations overhead.

The analysis pointed more of the recent methane surge at human activities in Asia than anyone had calculated.

Molecules act as IDs

Isotopologues are versions of methane that contain atoms with slightly different masses. Some have heavier carbon atoms. Others carry extra hydrogen weight.

They behave identically in the atmosphere, but specialized instruments can tell them apart. These subtle differences work like chemical signatures.

Methane from a coal mine carries a different isotopic pattern than methane from a wetland or a rice paddy. That makes each source traceable.

Satellites and stations together

Xueying Yu, research faculty at the University at Albany, SUNY (UAlbany), led an international team that set out to read methane’s molecular fingerprints from space and on the ground simultaneously.

Satellites tracked methane concentrations moving across the globe. Surface monitoring stations, scattered across multiple continents, recorded the isotopic signatures of the gas as it passed overhead.

Yu and her colleagues ran both streams of data through a computer model covering 2019 through 2021.

The model layered in isotopic information, measuring not just how much methane was present but what kind.

That allowed researchers to estimate both the total volume of emissions and where they were coming from. Previous approaches could not do both at the same time.

Where emissions were highest

The isotope-informed analysis revealed regional differences that satellites alone had missed. Emissions jumped by 26 million metric tons per year in East Asia, primarily driven by China.

South Asia, led by India, added seven million metric tons annually. Central Africa contributed another five million. A significant redistribution of where methane enters the atmosphere.

Coal and gas extraction appeared to be the most likely driver in China and India, based on the isotopic patterns – though the researchers noted that uncertainties in the regional breakdown remain.

The role of wetlands

The Amazon Basin told a different story. Estimates for the region dropped by five million metric tons per year compared to earlier calculations.

Natural wetlands appeared to release less methane than scientists had assumed.

Wetlands are among Earth’s largest natural methane sources. Getting their numbers right helps separate human-caused emissions from background rates.

The gap between old estimates and new measurements suggests current wetland models need work.

Human sources dominate growth

For climate policy, the distinction between natural and fossil fuel sources is critical. Methane from wetlands or permafrost tracks temperature and rainfall that humans can’t control.

Emissions from coal mines, gas pipelines, and oil operations come from infrastructure that can be monitored, reduced, or shut down.

“Our findings suggest human activities are playing a larger role in recent methane increases than previously thought – especially fossil fuel emissions in regions like China and India – while emissions from natural wetlands in the Amazon appear lower than expected,” Yu said.

The isotopic analysis also revealed patterns in how emissions time themselves. China showed less seasonal variation than earlier models predicted.

Southeast Asia showed a delayed summer peak. Both suggest emission sources that current inventories don’t capture.

New modeling surpasses predecessors

Previous methane isotope studies relied on simplified box models that treated the atmosphere as a set of compartments.

Those models couldn’t track how air actually moves, mixes, and carries isotopic signatures across continents.

“This method allows us to combine satellite methane data and ground-based isotope measurements consistently across space and time,” Yu said.

“It provides a more physically realistic and better-constrained picture of methane sources and processes than previous approaches.”

Yu’s team built the new framework around a model that simulates how the entire atmosphere behaves.

This allowed the researchers to track how methane and its isotopic variations change as air masses move across regions.

Lack of data adds uncertainty

Ground-based isotope measurements in this study draw from a limited global network of stations.

Some regions – particularly in the tropics – have thinner coverage than others, which adds uncertainty to the model’s conclusions there.

Expanding the network would help confirm how much regional estimates change as coverage improves.

The data window covers only 2019 through 2021, which may not fully capture longer-term trends.

Precision tracking is now possible

Atmospheric methane has hit record levels, with projections suggesting another 13 percent rise by 2030.

Knowing which regions and which sources are driving that increase determines where mitigation efforts should focus.

The isotopologue method offers that precision – distinguishing coal mines from rice fields, natural seeps from industrial leaks.

For regions like China and India, where fossil fuel operations cluster near agricultural zones, the distinction is essential for targeting effective reductions.

An expanding body of research links human activities to a larger share of the recent methane surge than previously attributed to natural sources – and this study adds geographic specificity to that picture.

The study drew together researchers from six countries, and the team plans to refine the approach with support from UAlbany’s Center for Emerging Artificial Intelligence Systems.

The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

—–

Like what you read? Subscribe to our newsletter for engaging articles, exclusive content, and the latest updates.

Check us out on EarthSnap, a free app brought to you by Eric Ralls and Earth.com.

—–

Satellites have tracked methane accumulating in the atmosphere for years.
