Tanya Aldred

Brook the bowler destroys Surrey top orderTanya Aldred

Under knotted Leeds skies and hi-fi floodlights, Yorkshire’s Harry Brook threw on his bowling cloak and destroyed Surrey’s top order, already under intense pressure after following on.

Bouncing in from the Howard Stand end, and sending down rapid nip-abouters, Brook first dismissed first Ryan Patel – slapping to cover, then bowled his England teammate Jamie Smith, before Adam Thomas happy-slappied one to point. There would have been a fourth if Jonny Bairstow hadn’t let Josh Blake slip through his gloves. In 15 minutes, Brook (three for 11) had doubled his first-class wicket tally at Headingley.

In between, Rory Burns fenced a snorter from White behind and Dan Lawrence played Matthew Revis into his boots only to watch the ball bounce into leg stump. When the rain came, Dom Sibley was the great survivor on 33, despite being knocked to the dirt by Jhye Richardson. Surrey, filleted by George Hill in their first innings, need 200 to make Yorkshire bat again.

Essex won the first game of the round, after a scattergun of wickets at Chelmsford. On a pitch made spicy by overnight rain, Leicestershire were rumbled by Sam Cook (four for 19) and Shane Snater (four for 12), all out for 60, eight of them extras. Essex had a few scares on the way to a victory target of 101, but Matt Critchley and Charlie Allison took them home.

At Lord’s, Derbyshire’s victory against Middlesex was postponed by Leus du Plooy’s 95; Sonny Baker’s five wickets against Nottinghamshire kept Hampshire in the game; Paul Coughlin’s rapid 50 for Lancashire against Worcestershire enlivened events at Southport; Sussex’s Daniel Hughes’ hundred against Somerset was the highlight of an on-off day at Taunton; and Ethan Bamber’s 46 and three for nought in 17 balls gave Warwickshire hope after the Glamorgan teenager Tom Norton grabbed another four wickets.

Water leaked under the covers at Beckenham meant Ben Stokes having a long net was the best the spectators got.

Share

Key events

Show key events only

Please turn on JavaScript to use this feature

Harry Brook’s lethal last hour bowling should mean an innings victory for Yorkshire here at Headingley, unless the rain intervenes. Crazy business. Now Matthew Revis in the wickets as Dan Lawrence plays the ball down into his boots only to watch it bounce back and hit leg stump. Surrey 56 for four. Lawrence stands, dazed, and slouches away.

ShareBrook bowls Smith

His second wicket of the over! Smith er, misses one, and loses his off stump.

Brook runs a semi-circle of celebration and is mobbed by his teammates. This shortly after Ryan Patel slapped him to cover. Brook two overs, two wickets for two.

Share

I guess I’d better start thinking about writing up while I stare at the Headingley covers. The lead just 46, four wickets left. Cliff charges in, lovely rhythmic run-up, orange soles to the press box.

Share Make that 12-1 as Ethan Bamber strikes with his first ball after the restart

Wow, what a catch from big Beau Webster as Ethan Bamber makes it two in the over. Bamber went full, Kiran Carlson went to drive it, and a thick edge flew quickly to third slip where the giant Webster managed to pluck it above his head. Glamorgan effectively 120-2

Ethan Bamber on the charge here … three wickets in the space of seven deliveries to see Glamorgan 13-3 … another thick edge, this time seeing Sam Hain initially parry the ball up before gobbling down (?) the rebound. Asa Tribe the batter to go.

Share

Oooh, wickets now at Chelmsford – Tall Paul and Dean Elgar both lbw. Blake the man out, Ben Cliff the bowler, who viewed the catch from ground level after falling over. A relief for Joe Root who couldn’t quite hold on to a screamer off Blake’s bat. Surrey 152 for eight.

Share Play is about to resume at Edgbaston, with a lovely burst of warm Birmbados sunshine having replaced the grey clouds and rain that forced everyone off. I have to say, there’s no sign of a confectionary stall. Steve and our friend Toby might know more…”

Share

A good-news bluetit update from Des Platt.

“You didn’t quite make it in willing them out before the local cricket started, but … seven very healthy looking young blue tits squeezed out of the box.

“There’s lots of thick vegetation around my garden for them to hide in so they should be as safe as any young bird can be.

“Right , off to the cricket now. Are you seeing the beginning of the end of this great Surrey team? I saw previous Surrey champion team disintegrate in front of me at Old Trafford in 2003 as Carl Hooper pulverised them to go from 29 to 100 whilst Garry Keedy scored one. They used the usual tactics of putting everyone back on the boundary which still get used by teams and never work . Hooper simply scored 2s, 4s and 6s. They were never the same again; cruising to the championship and an hour later, they were destroyed.”

This is a good question. I picked them as champions, because Stewart was back in charge and I trusted in the juggernaut. But though they grind out big scores, so do the opposition. I think the bowling needs a point of difference.

George Hill comes back on from the football stand end. Surrey 125 for seven.

!["Ali]("https://www.newsbeep.com/ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1779101841_54_Ali_martin3,_L.png")
