In Tottori, however, sand is for creating and remembering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prefecture is known for its sand dunes and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sand-museum.jp\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tottori Sand Museum<\/a>, which this year marked a milestone of 20 years of transforming sand into monumental sculptures, similar to how Sapporo has been using Hokkaido\u2019s snowy winters with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/community\/2026\/02\/27\/voices\/sapporo-snow-festival-sculpture-contest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Snow Festival<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Sand Museum\u2019s exhibitions, which started outdoors in 2006 and moved indoors into a dedicated building in 2012, take on a new theme each year, usually a country, a continent or a historical period such as the Renaissance.
