{"id":677525,"date":"2026-05-18T13:20:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/677525\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T13:20:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:20:10","slug":"montreal-strippers-target-canadian-grand-prix-f1-weekend-with-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/677525\/","title":{"rendered":"Montreal strippers target Canadian Grand Prix F1 weekend with strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of strippers in Montreal have planned strike action which directly coincides with this weekend\u2019s Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>The Sex Work Autonomous Committee (SWAC) will strike on 23 May, which is the day the sprint race and qualifying will take place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the planned strike is not coincidence, with the Canadian Grand Prix being purposely targeted due to being the \u201cbusiest\u201d and \u201cmost lucrative period of the year\u201d for clubs.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xpb_1354856_hires.jpg\"   type=\"image\/jpeg\" alt=\"A record crowd attended the Montreal race last year \" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A record crowd attended the Montreal race last year<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think the grand prix is the best time to strike,&#8221; a statement read, as quoted by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The clubs are at their busiest, making it the most lucrative period of the year for our boss. This is our chance to threaten that income and affect them when it hurts the most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this time, despite management making more money, dancers have to put up with a list of new rules, increased bar fees, overbooking and generally worse working conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SWAC argues that clubs and bars hold too much power over dancers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that we\u2019re clearly trapped in an employer\/employee power dynamic, and the bar fee model benefits only the bosses,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, they have every incentive to bring in as many dancers as possible each night to maximise their profits.
