Discovery to spin off their company\u2019s cable channels into a separate entity. That should not, however, be taken to mean that they\u2019re just fine with the status quo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no question that [cable is] a super challenging business,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/george-cheeks\/\" id=\"auto-tag_george-cheeks_1\" data-tag=\"george-cheeks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Cheeks<\/a>, chairman of TV media at the newly merged company, said Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/david-ellison-top-gun-star-trek-1236343043\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">during a media session<\/a> with other members of Paramount Skydance\u2019s C-suite. Cheeks, who was a co-CEO of Paramount and head of CBS prior to the merger, will continue to run the broadcast network while adding the company\u2019s cable outlets to his portfolio. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith streaming taking a dominant position in TV use and cable numbers shrinking, Cheeks and Paramount Skydance president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jeff-shell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jeff-shell_1\" data-tag=\"jeff-shell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Shell<\/a> both acknowledged to reporters that they\u2019ll need to make some changes to the business model. Cheeks also noted that Paramount\u2019s cable channels are home to a number of \u201ciconic franchises\u201d that will be continue to be valuable to the company. He didn\u2019t name-check any particular property, but cable institutions like South Park, The Daily Show, SpongeBob SquarePants and Yellowstone all live on Paramount Skydance channels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re all seeing the pay cable business shift over to streaming, so there will be a lot of conversations about what iconic franchises we want to continue, maybe shift to streaming, etc.,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re [six] days in, but I do feel like there\u2019s a lot to preserve there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShell added that rather than seeing the cable outlets (BET, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, Smithsonian, TV Land and VH1, plus premium outlet Showtime) as \u201cdeclining linear assets,\u201d Paramount Skydance will take the approach that they are \u201cbrands we have to redefine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tResponding to a question about BET \u2014 which has been the subject of persistent talk about a possible sale in recent years \u2014\u00a0CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/david-ellison\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-ellison_1\" data-tag=\"david-ellison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Ellison<\/a> said his intention is to keep the company Skydance and its partner RedBird Capital purchased intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe had this conversation with Shari [Redstone] when we had the first meeting about the company \u2014\u00a0our intention is to keep the company together and invest through that lens long term,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Paramount Skydance\u2019s top executives aren\u2019t looking to follow moves by NBCUniversal and Warner Bros.
