{"id":678386,"date":"2026-05-18T22:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T22:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/678386\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T22:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T22:34:10","slug":"canadas-galarneau-draxl-win-first-matches-in-french-open-qualifying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/678386\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s Galarneau, Draxl win first matches in French Open qualifying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada is off to a good start at the second Grand Slam of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Alexis Galarneau and Liam Draxl won their first matches in the French Open men&#8217;s qualifying draw on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Galarneau, from Laval, Que., won a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-7) marathon over Alex Barrena of Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Draxl, from Newmarket, Ont, beat Ilia Simakin of Russia 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>Players must win three qualifying matches to be assured of a spot in the main draw.<\/p>\n<p>Draxl qualified for the Australian Open this year, marking his first Grand Slam. Galarneau has yet to play in a main draw at a Grand Slam.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s Bianca Andreescu, Katherine Sebov, Kayla Cross, Carol Zhao and Cadence Brace play first-round women&#8217;s qualifiers on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The main draw starts Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canada is off to a good start at the second Grand Slam of the year.
