Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside.”

Southwestern Ontario is in a heat wave. Here’s how Windsorites are trying to beat the heat

It’s going to be a hot few days in Windsor-Essex, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s — and that’s before the humidity makes it feel even warmer. The CBC’s Jennifer La Grassa braved the heat to check in with Windsorites on how they’re keeping cool.

If a person’s living space becomes too hot, they should seek refuge in a cool public space like a cooling centre, community centre, library, or shaded park, the release says. Residents in the affected areas can follow the guidance provided by their region’s public health authority.

It’s also suggested to schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day, thereby limiting direct exposure to the sun and heat.

“Never leave people, especially children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Check the vehicle before locking to make sure no one is left behind,” Environment Canada said in the release.

Predictions for the summer ahead

The weather experienced in southwestern Ontario this week could also provide a snapshot into the types of temperatures expected in the region this summer, according to Robert McLeman, professor of environmental studies at Wilfred Laurier University.

He says the region will likely experience a hot and humid summer with a lot of precipitation.

With heat waves becoming more commonplace in May and early June in southwestern Ontario, the environmental professor says many residents in the area may forget this type of weather is unusual in the region.

“I mean it’s quite usual for us to get frost in southwestern Ontario in the month of May,” McLeman said.

“What we’re seeing across Canada and particularly in southern Ontario is that winters are just becoming shorter and milder and less snowy. And springtime seems to be more compacted now.”

He adds that going forward, similarly high temperatures may start to become typical for the month of May in future years.

McLeman says Monday’s temperatures are still below the record temperature for May 18 in Windsor. That record was set in 1962, when the area hit 34 C.

Listen to this article Estimated 4 minutes The audio version of this article is generated by AI-based technology.…

[22
49,48,295,66
post-678694","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
