Winnipeg is recognizing Paramedic Services Week from May 17 to May 23, highlighting the work of more than 650 licensed paramedics and their role in emergency and community-based care across the city.<\/p>\n
The annual observance this year carries the theme \u201cImproving Outcomes, Together,\u201d focusing on collaboration within the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and across the broader health-care system.<\/p>\n
City officials say paramedics respond to about 110,000 medical incidents annually in Winnipeg, ranging from emergency 9-1-1 calls to inter-facility transfers and community care responses.<\/p>\n
Mayor Scott Gillingham says the week is an opportunity to recognize the work paramedics do in high-pressure and often unpredictable situations.<\/p>\n
\u201cParamedic Services Week is an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary work Winnipeg\u2019s paramedics do every day to care for residents in moments of crisis and uncertainty,\u201d Gillingham said.<\/p>\n
Fire and Paramedic Chief Cristian Schmidt says paramedics bring both technical expertise and compassion to their work.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey combine advanced clinical skills with empathy and a deep commitment to those they serve,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cI\u2019m proud of the work our teams do every day to make a difference when it matters most.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wide range of paramedic roles highlighted<\/p>\n
According to the City of Winnipeg, paramedics operate in several specialized roles depending on patient needs.<\/p>\n
Primary Care Paramedics respond to a wide range of emergency calls, while Advanced Care Paramedics provide more complex life-saving interventions and procedures.<\/p>\n
Advanced Care Paramedic Practitioners deliver an even higher level of care for complex and high-risk cases, including infants and children.<\/p>\n
Community Paramedics also play a growing role, supporting programs such as EPIC, working in shelters, and helping connect individuals with health-care resources outside of emergency departments.<\/p>\n
Tactical Emergency Medical Services paramedics operate in higher-risk environments alongside police, providing care in situations where safety concerns are present.<\/p>\n
Collaboration seen as key focus<\/p>\n
