Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.61 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 0.46 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX climbed 1.10 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 increased 0.56 per cent.<\/p>\n
In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.44 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng finished 0.48 per cent higher.<\/p>\n
Commodities<\/p>\n
Oil prices fell after Trump said he put a planned attack on Iran on hold, and Tehran sent a new peace proposal to Washington.<\/p>\n
Brent crude futures fell 1.1 per cent to US$110.90 a barrel on the back of Trump\u2019s comments, while West Texas Intermediate crude was 0.4 per cent lower at US$108.30 per barrel. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to jump from one news cycle to the next, with plenty of noise being created but, so far, no meaningful developments pointing toward the beginning of the end of the war,\u201d said Ole Hansen of Saxo Bank. <\/p>\n
In other commodities, spot gold dropped 0.6 per cent to US$4,539.54 per ounce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery lost 0.3 per cent to US$4,543. <\/p>\n
Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n
The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n
The day range on the loonie was 72.63 US cents to 72.80 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 0.72 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n
The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, rose 0.08 per cent to 99.18. The dollar was pegged at $1.3765. <\/p>\n
The euro slid 0.33 per cent to US$1.1621. The British pound was up 0.22 per cent to US$1.3406.<\/p>\n
In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.614 per cent.<\/p>\n
