ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania faced plenty of criticism<\/a> for reporting the 2026 NBA MVP award several hours ahead of Prime Video\u2019s official announcement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiple sources tell me this morning that Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a> has been voted as the NBA\u2019s most valuable player,\u201d Charania said on a Sunday edition of SportsCenter after initially breaking the news in a post on X.<\/a> \u201cThis means he\u2019s won back-to-back MVP awards.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the pregame show ahead of Game 7 of the second-round series between the Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> and Detroit Pistons<\/a>, the NBA on Prime crew called out Charania<\/a> for the early announcement before they officially delivered the news.<\/p>\n

And on Monday, Charania defended his SGA NBA MVP announcement<\/a>: \u201cMy job is to report the news.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, more criticism of the early report from Charania arrived on Monday, from four-time NBA champion Draymond Green.<\/p>\n

Along with being a forward for the Golden State Warriors<\/a>, Green has been an analyst on Inside the NBA over the years, including earlier this month<\/a>. He will also serve as an Inside the NBA guest analyst<\/a> during the Eastern Conference Finals. And Inside the NBA is now, of course, on ESPN, the same network on which Charania serves as the prominent lead NBA insider.<\/p>\n

Green, who has certainly never been afraid to speak his mind, called the Charania reporting the NBA MVP before Prime Video\u2019s official announcement \u201cembarrassing\u201d for the NBA, and he said that the NBA \u201chas to do something about that.\u201d He also referred to the early report as \u201cpathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, I think the NBA has to do something about that,\u201d Green said on his podcast. \u201cUltimately, you\u2019re the NBA. You control the media. Shams is an NBA reporter with ESPN, who\u2019s a partner of the NBA. To tweet at six o\u2019clock in the morning who the NBA MVP is, it\u2019s actually embarrassing. It makes our league look like we have no organization. It makes our league look like\u2026 That\u2019s child\u2019s play. We can\u2019t hold the winner of the most prestigious individual award in the NBA; we can\u2019t hold those results until it\u2019s actually time to be announced?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a little disappointing,\u201d Green continued. \u201cThere\u2019s no way that can happen. If there\u2019s supposed to be an announcement on Amazon Prime, the announcement has to happen on Amazon Prime. This is something Commissioner Silver has to do something about. This can\u2019t happen. Come on. You leak it on Twitter? It also can\u2019t be that important to leak information. Come on. I thought that was pretty pathetic, if I\u2019m being honest. The NBA has to do something. That can\u2019t be the case. The MVP gets leaked at six o\u2019clock in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually thought it was fake, because I saw somebody else tweet it,\u201d Green explained. \u201cI had to start searching\u2026 and then go on Instagram, and, like, oh, no, it\u2019s true\u2026. Come on. Something has to be done. That cannot happen. The leak of the NBA MVP.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are we doing?\u201d Green added. \u201cIt would be one thing if it\u2019s not a prominent reporter in the NBA. But, like, it\u2019s Shams. Shams has to be in partnership with the NBA to be as prominent as he is. That can\u2019t happen. I thought that was embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n
