{"id":680098,"date":"2026-05-19T17:47:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/680098\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T17:47:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:47:15","slug":"kingsway-mall-in-the-70s-looked-cool-and-we-want-the-plants-back-daily-hive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/680098\/","title":{"rendered":"Kingsway Mall in the &#8217;70s looked cool and we want the plants back | Daily Hive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For 50 years, Kingsway Mall has been a major shopping and gathering destination for north-central Edmonton, and the city\u2019s second-largest mall used to have a really cool vibe.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1976, the mall looks almost unrecognizable in photos preserved by the Provincial Archives of Alberta, showing just how much the space has changed over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>While undeniably dated, the mall is filled with greenery, gold trim and warm tones that give it a cozy and inviting feel \u2014 a contrast to the bright, almost sterile white interior we see today.<\/p>\n<p>The photos, posted to the Provincial Archives of Alberta Flickr page, were taken sometime in 1977, the site says, so these would have been taken shortly after it first opened to the public.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/51889906393_7a4f2397a2_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1820004 size-full\" width=\"731\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1820004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Provincial Archives of Alberta\/Flickr<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the trees and brick storefronts, the photos also capture a totally different era of shopping. Who remembers Coles? And Sears? And while the mall\u2019s exterior kept that same brown brick look for decades, it too has since been modernized and revamped.<\/p>\n<p>Well, now we know why they called it Kingsway Garden Mall, at least.<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember when Kingsway Mall looked like this?
