In a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/tech-demo-missions-program\/cryogenic-fluid-management-cfm\/nasa-industry-prepare-cryogenic-fuel-technology-demo\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/tech-demo-missions-program\/cryogenic-fluid-management-cfm\/nasa-industry-prepare-cryogenic-fuel-technology-demo\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>, NASA said these in-space propellant depots could some day be &#8220;essentially gas stations in space that could support long-term exploration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e5536a40-7078-4638-8329-defa8de26165-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">LOXSAT will head to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO) this summer aboard a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Lab<\/a> Photon <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> bus, hitching a ride on an Electron launch vehicle, from the company&#8217;s facilities in New Zealand no earlier than July 17, according to NASA&#8217;s statement. The mission is set to last for nine months, and will conduct tests on 11 different components of cryogenic fluid management to collect data to mature the technologies for scaling.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-bcdf075b-051f-46bb-bf70-50ba0014676b\">Cryogenic fuels must be managed with tight temperature controls to prevent them from boiling off, whether on Earth or in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a>. The same temperature conditions that make those liquids hard to store also make them hard to transfer, and the ability to do so between vehicles in space is a crucial step to unlocking missions to deep space, like those of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a> to return astronauts to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> and other exploration efforts such as crewed missions to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mission is a collaboration with Eta Space of Rockledge, Florida, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> hopes the technology can evolve to support on-orbit fueling depots for spacecraft designed for long-term deep space objectives. It&#8217;s central to the success of the agency&#8217;s upcoming lunar goals, and part of a larger <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/space-technology-mission-directorate\/tdm\/cryogenic-fluid-management-cfm\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/space-technology-mission-directorate\/tdm\/cryogenic-fluid-management-cfm\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cryogenic Fluid Management Portfolio Project<\/a> involving scientists and engineers from NASA\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/marshall-space-flight-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/marshall-space-flight-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/marshall-space-flight-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marshall Space Flight Center<\/a>, Glenn Research Center, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> (KSC).<\/p>\n<p>Eta Space was selected under NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-announces-partners-to-advance-tipping-point-technologies-for-the-moon-mars\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-announces-partners-to-advance-tipping-point-technologies-for-the-moon-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tipping Point<\/a> initiative, which chose 14 companies to develop a variety of technologies to support the Artemis program&#8217;s goal of sustained operations on the surface of the moon by 2030. Managing cryogenic fuels in space is a critical part of that architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Both Artemis lunar landers commissioned under NASA&#8217;s Human Landing System contracts rely on cryogenic propellants, and require on-orbit refueling in order to complete their missions of landing astronauts on the lunar surface and delivering them back to lunar orbit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Both landers also use liquid oxygen as the oxidizer for their respective propellants. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>&#8216;s Starship is powered by a mixture of liquid oxygen and liquid methane (methalox). The other, Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon lander<\/a>, is powered by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen (hydrolox) \u2014 both of which require constant cryogenic refrigeration to maintain their liquid state. Neither landers (or any other spacecraft, to date) have yet demonstrated how they will handle long-term storage of those super-chilled fuels, or the ability to transfer them between vehicles. SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> is poised to launch its twelfth test flight later this week (currently no earlier than May 20), and Blue Origin&#8217;s Blue Moon Mark 1 (MK1) is undergoing late-stage testing at the company&#8217;s facilities near KSC, in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of Starship&#8217;s Flight 12 will have deep implications for how the vehicle&#8217;s development progresses through the rest of the year. It&#8217;s the first launch of Starship Version 3, and the first iteration of the spacecraft designed to eventually demonstrate capabilities like on-orbit refueling. A successful test on its first launch could mean a higher cadence of test launches moving forward \u2014 seven months have passed between Starship&#8217;s upcoming launch and its last. But a failure could delay Starship&#8217;s development further, and, in turn, potentially set back the timeline for NASA&#8217;s Artemis missions.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon MK1 is progressing towards launch readiness<\/a>, but the company&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn<\/a> rocket is currently grounded due to a mishap with its second stage during its most recent mission, which failed to deliver its payload to orbit. MK1 is a cargo variant of the crewed lander Blue Origin plans to use for NASA&#8217;s Artemis missions, and is scheduled to perform a lunar landing demonstration later this year, pending the completion of the FAA&#8217;s investigation into New Glenn&#8217;s previous failure.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is targeting late 2027 for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> mission, which will launch four astronauts to LEO to practice rendezvous and docking maneuvers between their <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> and one or both of the program&#8217;s lunar landers.
