15 charges laid for extortion incidents in Abbotsford and Surrey<\/p>\n

A man who was facing six charges for an extortion-related shooting in Abbotsford now faces nine more charges in Surrey.<\/p>\n
According to court records, Gursewak Singh, 22, was charged last Thursday (May 14) with one count of extortion on Sept. 6 in Surrey and six offences from Dec. 14 that include extortion using a firearm and unlawfully discharging a firearm.<\/p>\n
He also faces two counts of arson damaging property from Dec. 15 in Surrey.<\/p>\n
Surrey Police Service (SPS) reported in a press release on Dec. 14 that they were investigating a report of shots being fired at around 2:30 a.m. outside a business in the 8000 block of 120 Street.<\/p>\n
The release stated that the outside of the business \u2013 Paratha 2 Pasta \u2013 had been damaged, and although staff were inside at the time, nobody was injured.<\/p>\n
SPS reported that the incident was believed to be extortion-related.<\/p>\n
In a press release on Tuesday (May 19) confirming the new charges, SPS said that the arson charges from Dec. 15 relate to two vehicles being set on fire in a business parking lot in the 12400 block of Old Yale Road.<\/p>\n
The business had also received extortion threats, SPS said.<\/p>\n
Singh was first arrested in Abbotsford following an extortion-related shooting in Abbotsford on Dec. 17.<\/p>\n
That incident took place outside a business in the 31000 block of King Road at around 9:45 p.m. Nobody was injured.<\/p>\n
It was the second time in a month that the same business was targeted.<\/p>\n
Officers who arrived on scene shared the suspect vehicle\u2019s description with other units. A vehicle matching the description was spotted on Highway 1 near Whatcom Road.<\/p>\n
The car was pulled over, and the driver was arrested.<\/p>\n
Police announced two days later that Singh had been charged with discharging a firearm for the shooting on Dec. 17. They also released a photo of him, saying that \u201cdisclosure is necessary in the public interest to assist with the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He has since had five more charges added in relation to that incident \u2013 four of them for weapons offences and one for extortion using a firearm.<\/p>\n
Singh remains in custody at this time.<\/p>\n
