Even with Caitlin Clark drawing headlines and Indiana showing flashes offensively, the team looked noticeably different without Aliyah Boston on the floor Sunday against the Seattle Storm. That is why Boston’s latest injury update ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against the Portland Fire could be one of the most important developments of Indiana’s young season.

Boston missed the first game of her WNBA career after dealing with a lingering lower leg injury that first surfaced during Friday’s game against the Washington Mystics. While the Fever still handled Seattle with an 89-78 victory, Indiana’s frontcourt depth and defensive identity remain closely tied to Boston’s presence. Fortunately for the Fever, the early signs appear encouraging.

According to IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson, Boston participated in practice Tuesday and sounded optimistic about her status moving forward.

“Everything’s great, I’m feeling great,” Boston said while explaining the injury is more about managing discomfort than recovering from one specific moment.

“Everything’s great, I’m feeling great,” Aliyah Boston says at practice today.

Says there wasn’t any specific moment on Friday, but general discomfort that prompted her going out, and I t’s a continuation of her lower leg injury that she’ll have to manage.

— Chloe Peterson (@chloepeterson67) May 19, 2026Fever need Aliyah Boston at full strength

Indiana’s offense may revolve around tempo, spacing and the playmaking brilliance of Clark, but Boston remains the player who stabilizes everything inside. Her ability to defend multiple positions, rebound and facilitate from the post gives the Fever a different dimension when fully healthy.

Through three games this season, Boston has averaged 12 points, five rebounds and two assists while shooting 48 percent from the field. She also continues to expand her perimeter game, knocking down 33.3 percent of her three-point attempts.

MORE: Cameron Brink makes statement in new basketball photos

More importantly, the former No. 1 overall pick has become one of the emotional anchors of the franchise. After earning All-WNBA Second Team honors and finishing sixth in MVP voting last season, expectations surrounding Boston continue to rise. Indiana is no longer simply building for the future. The Fever expect to compete now.

Portland matchup suddenly becomes more intriguing

Wednesday’s game against Portland now carries added significance because it could mark Boston’s return to the lineup. Even if she plays limited minutes, simply having her available changes Indiana’s rotation flexibility and interior defense. The Fever enter the matchup at 2-2 and are still searching for consistency early in the season. Getting Boston healthy may ultimately be the key factor that determines whether Indiana can take the next step from playoff team to legitimate contender.

Tip-off between the Fever and Fire is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

More WNBA news:

The Indiana Fever have spent the opening stretch of the 2026 WNBA season trying to balance expectations with…

[629
49,48,82,630
post-680516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wnba","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports","tag-wnba
["GET
