Paving work on the bridge is taking place this week. (Image: City of Mississauga)

A long-awaited pedestrian bridge that opened in northwest Mississauga last December after several delays is being shut down this week — but only for a day.

The new walking bridge over busy Battleford Road, between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Tenth Line in Meadowvale, is closed to pedestrians on Wednesday (May 20) to allow crews to complete asphalt/paving work, Mississauga Ward 9 Coun. Martin Reid said in an online update to the community.

Reid added contractors will finish the job, weather permitting, by end of the day on Wednesday and the structure should reopen shortly afterwards.

“To ensure public safety, the bridge will be temporarily closed during this work,” the councillor noted. “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during these final stages of construction.”

The Battleford Pedestrian Bridge was initially scheduled to open to the public in time for the first week of school last September. However, multiple delays “due to the late delivery of the steel bridge from the supplier” kept pushing the opening date back, Reid said at the time.

When the bridge did open, it was complete with higher rails and a safer surface compared to the older structure, the councillor noted back in December.

Reid also thanked residents at the time for their patience as the much-delayed pedestrian bridge wound up opening three months later than the original target date.

Contractors installed the replacement structure the first weekend in November, but follow-up work that lasted four weeks was needed to make the bridge people-ready, according to the City of Mississauga.

The first delay pushed the bridge opening back to the end of September while the second delay was to see the structure open to the public in mid-October. A subsequent estimate pegged the bridge opening at mid-November before officials amended that to a completion/opening date closer to the end of November.

The new raised walkway over one of the busiest roads in the area replaces the previous structure, which had suffered the effects of age, the city said earlier.

“It’s essential to replace the old, deteriorated bridge and construct a new bridge that meets the current standard requirements,” the city noted last year.

Other upgrades were also provided to support the new bridge, including the installation of erosion and sediment controls, the removal of existing abutments and the placement of retaining walls.

INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Last 30 Days: 58,878 Votes

All Time: 1,353,147 Votes

    113 VOTES
Are you excited for the World Cup?

WIN A $100 GIFT CARD

Subscribe to INsauga’s daily email newsletter for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

An earlier rendering of the now-completed pedestrian bridge over Battleford Road in north Mississauga.
