{"id":682792,"date":"2026-05-20T21:49:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/682792\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T21:49:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:49:14","slug":"canadian-steel-firms-to-pay-19m-to-resolve-claims-of-avoiding-u-s-tariffs-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/682792\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian steel firms to pay $19M to resolve claims of avoiding U.S. tariffs &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>Two Canadian steel companies have agreed to pay $19 million to resolve allegations they knowingly failed to pay proper <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/steel-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">duties on flat-rolled steel<\/a> manufactured in Europe and Asia, the U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>From May 2019 through January 2025, Farjess Inc. and Royal Canadian Steel Inc., along with part-owner and president Feroz Jessani, misrepresented the origin of the steel as Canadian and American, the department said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The companies knew the steel was from China, Indonesia, Italy, Turkey or Vietnam, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>A whistleblower broker flagged the two Canadian companies through a provision in the False Claims Act that allows private parties to file lawsuits on behalf of the United States for false claims.<\/p>\n<p>That broker will get about $3.61 million as part of the settlement with the Canadian steel companies.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImport duties serve an important role in protecting our national interests generally and the American steel industry in particular,\u201d U.S. Assistant Attorney General Brett A.
