{"id":683448,"date":"2026-05-21T04:53:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T04:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/683448\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T04:53:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T04:53:08","slug":"government-recognizes-work-is-needed-to-meet-challenges-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/683448\/","title":{"rendered":"Government recognizes work is needed to meet challenges ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government seems to be getting serious about nation building.<\/p>\n<p>Actions since last year\u2019s election point toward a renewed recognition that the country needs to do something to prepare its economic infrastructure for the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n<p>One example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/privy-council\/major-projects-office.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Major Projects Office<\/a>, which has been given its first list of national initiatives to kick-start the Canadian economy.<\/p>\n<p>The agriculture industry made its position loud and clear that at least some of its priority projects needed to be on that list.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portvancouver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Port of Vancouver<\/a> received particular attention from the sector because of the important role it plays in moving agricultural exports overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, the industry failed to convince the government, and its priorities were pretty much left off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/privy-council\/major-projects-office\/projects\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the final list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the projects focus on energy and mining, although a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/privy-council\/major-projects-office\/projects\/national.html#2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">container port at Montreal<\/a> did make the list, which is something, we suppose.<\/p>\n<p>However, the industry will have to continue its lobbying efforts if and when another list of priority infrastructure projects is put together to make sure agriculture is not forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>    Read Also<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/opinion\/swine-research-produces-economic-benefits\/\" data-click=\"gfm-click-tracking\" data-module-id=\"ARTICLE_SNEAK_PEAK\" data-module-name=\"Read Also\" data-module-location=\"Inside Content\" data-page-type=\"Single Page\" class=\"tw:shrink-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"winter-article-sneak-peak--image tw:w-32 tw:h-24 tw:shrink-0 lazyload\" width=\"128\" height=\"96\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/307665_web1_sows-with-piglets-Manitoba-October-2024-GW-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Pigs in a Manitoba pig barn.\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 128px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 128\/96;\"\/><br \/>\n            <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/programs\/funding-programs\/trade-diversification-corridors-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Trade Diversification Corridor Fund<\/a>, which has been promised an investment of $5 billion into trade enabling infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible investments include ports, railways, inland terminals, airports and highways, and the agriculture sector is going to have to make sure that the projects, when they are selected, make sense for farmers and industry.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent initiative that will need agriculture\u2019s attention is the federal government\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2026\/04\/canada-strong-fund.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sovereign wealth fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Canada Strong Fund is intended to act as an investment vehicle for the major national projects in which the government is interested.<\/p>\n<p>While the term \u201csovereign wealth fund\u201d is being used in discussions about this initiative, that is not completely accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Most sovereign wealth funds around the world are used by countries to squirrel away extra money and then invest it with an eye toward earning a return on that investment.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the more well-known funds were set up by oil-producing countries, such as Kuwait, Norway and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Saudis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pif.gov.sa\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Public Investment Fund<\/a>, through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company<\/a>, is the majority owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.g3.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">G3 Canada<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bunge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bunge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Canada Strong Fund isn\u2019t actually Canada\u2019s first sovereign wealth fund.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/heritage-savings-trust-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund<\/a> in 1976 to reinvest a portion of the province\u2019s resource revenue.<\/p>\n<p>It never accumulated the amounts that were initially anticipated, largely because of government\u2019s willingness to pull out money to fund short-term political goals.<\/p>\n<p>This should be a cautionary tale for Ottawa as it goes ahead with its Canada Strong Fund.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a big difference between what the federal government is planning and how most other sovereign wealth funds are managed.<\/p>\n<p>Most are funded with surpluses, but Canada doesn\u2019t have surpluses.<\/p>\n<p>The national deficit keeps growing, partly because of the government\u2019s renewed focus on increasing investment in the country\u2019s economic infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Few details are yet available about how the Canada Strong Fund will work, but we do know the government plans to put in $25 billion initially over three years, which isn\u2019t going to help the country\u2019s deficit.<\/p>\n<p>However, prime minister Mark Carney says there will also be an opportunity for foreign investors and regular Canadians to invest in the fund.<\/p>\n<p>The government has said the fund will be used to focus on areas such as advanced manufacturing, energy and mining.<\/p>\n<p>There is no mention of agriculture, similar to the Major Projects Office\u2019s initial priority list.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s going to be up to farmers, their organizations and the agriculture industry in general to push hard on the levers of power to ensure that their sector is not neglected by this new effort to build economic infrastructure in Canada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The federal government seems to be getting serious about nation building.
