US Open<\/a> warm-up events, having made trips to Washington, Toronto, and Cincinnati.<\/p>\nSharing his thoughts on Fritz\u2019s packed schedule, coach Michael Russell has explained why the 27-year-old stays busy.<\/p>\n
Michael Russell says Taylor Fritz \u2018enjoys competition more than training\u2019 so plays a busy schedule<\/p>\n
During a recent sit-down interview, Russell was asked why Fritz plays one of the busiest schedules on tour.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, he does like to play, kudos to him, he\u2019s extremely stubborn, but he\u2019s one of the most competitive human beings that I\u2019ve ever met,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich is\u00a0a big positive for his character, which is why you see that never-say-die attitude, fighting for every point.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut, sometimes he enjoys the competition a lot more than training, which is understandable, but at the same time, having those training blocks is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell proceeded to highlight the difficulties in balancing Fritz\u2019s busy schedule with other commitments.<\/p>\n
\u201cCollaboration and coordination with his agent, to make sure he fulfills his sponsor commitments, the training blocks, and the tournaments are coordinated throughout the year, it\u2019s a challenge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe try to microdose training blocks in between, and the schedule is getting longer, the Masters series are two weeks, so it\u2019s a challenge for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fritz has remarkably entered 17 tournaments this year, playing 53 matches, winning three titles.<\/p>\n

Travelling to as many tournaments together as Russell and Fritz do, it\u2019s vital they maintain a healthy relationship, something the 47-year-old works hard on.<\/p>\n

Russell explained how he and Fritz balance the time they spend together and apart, so as not to grow tired of each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpecifically for Taylor and I, we\u2019re travelling almost 40 weeks together, that\u2019s a lot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of our day together is usually spent just at the courts, on the practice courts, then he\u2019ll do his own thing at dinner.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a healthy way to have a little more mental health for everyone, because it\u2019s a lot of time together. But it\u2019s good, it\u2019s been working well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The American spoke at length about the importance of trust in a player-coach relationship.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s definitely super important to create that relationship and make sure that they\u2019re comfortable and they understand that you know, it\u2019s a two-way relationship and there\u2019s that open communication,\u201d said Russell.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey understand what you\u2019re trying to do, you understand what they\u2019re trying to do.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, when they see that you have the passion and the trust that you\u2019re out there to make sure they\u2019re out succeeding, that just builds confidence, and that\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the results they\u2019ve achieved together recently, it\u2019s clear to see Russell and Fritz trust one another fully.<\/p>\n
