CHICAGO — Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a> called his errors over the past two games \u201claughable\u201d after allowing a ball to scoot under his glove in the second inning of Wednesday night\u2019s 5-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The error led to three runs scoring as Brewers third baseman David Hamilton<\/a> came all the way around after hitting a liner to center field on the play.<\/p>\n

Crow-Armstrong also dropped a fly ball in Tuesday\u2019s game, though that one didn\u2019t lead to any runs for Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday and today are genuinely laughable,\u201d Crow-Armstrong said. \u201cOne thing I can fall back on is, it\u2019s never a lack of focus but [instead] trying too hard and trying to make up for the lack of production that I have given this team and this city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crow-Armstrong went 0-for-3 Wednesday with two strikeouts and has an OPS of just .659 after signing a six-year, $115 million contract extension over the winter. Some of that salary went to a fine he incurred after a heated exchange with a fan during Sunday\u2019s loss to the White Sox.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything physically usually starts mentally,\u201d Crow-Armstrong said. \u201cI think that\u2019s what I\u2019m showing everyone right now. That can\u2019t happen. That kind of stuff just can\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cubs have been in a \u201cfunk\u201d lately, according to manager Craig Counsell. They\u2019ve lost five in a row as well as their hold on first place in the NL Central. The Brewers now hold that distinction after a decisive three-game sweep.<\/p>\n

The Cubs had more errors (three) than hits (two) Wednesday as Brewers starter Kyle Harrison<\/a> struck out 11 over seven innings. The team that had two 10-game win streaks already this season looks like a shell of itself right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a great group in here,\u201d third baseman Alex Bregman<\/a> said. \u201cGuys have been through ups and downs and know how this game works. At the end of 162, the cream always rises to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bregman has a locker next to Crow-Armstrong and is considered a mentor and a leader for him and the team. He was asked about his center fielder\u2019s struggles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not worried at all about him,\u201d Bregman said, looking over at his locker. \u201cI know what he puts into the game. He\u2019s a guy that you want on your team in big games. Regardless of what he says, he\u2019s been a difference-maker this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Counsell was also asked about Crow-Armstrong and whether his struggles this week — both on and off the field — are connected. He waved off the premise.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings happen,\u201d Counsell said. \u201cWe have to move on from them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crow-Armstrong seems acutely aware of the extreme opinions about him and knows it\u2019s also up to him to write his own narrative. It starts with playing better baseball despite whatever emotions he\u2019s feeling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like people have a lot of different opinions about that,\u201d he said. \u201cMy emotions, I think it goes in a few different ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s up to me to turn that stuff around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several Cubs, including Wednesday\u2019s starter Edward Cabrera<\/a>, came to Crow-Armstrong\u2019s defense, which the 24-year-old appreciated. Cabrera was on the mound when Hamilton\u2019s ball got under Crow-Armstrong\u2019s glove.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe deserves better than what I gave him today,\u201d Crow-Armstrong said. \u201cThe pitching staff knows those are two rare plays that happened the last two days.
