According to ESPN\u2019s Bill Barnwell, the Indianapolis Colts\u2019 best move of the 2026 NFL offseason was signing former Tennessee Titans veteran free agent edge Arden Key to a 2-year, $16 million contract<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Best: Signing\u00a0Arden Key\u00a0to a two-year, $16 million contract. General manager Chris Ballard has tried to draft and develop edge rushers with limited success, and the Colts moved on from the likes of\u00a0Kwity Paye<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Tyquan Lewis<\/a>\u00a0this offseason.\u00a0Laiatu Latu<\/a>\u00a0took a big step forward as a pass rusher last year, and the Colts will hope for a breakthrough season from 2025 second-rounder\u00a0JT Tuimoloau<\/a>, but Indianapolis needed another edge rusher in its rotation and didn\u2019t have a first-round pick to go after one.<\/p>\n

Landing on Key was a solid move at the right cost. The 30-year-old journeyman has been a consistently solid rotational player on the edge. He has managed double-digit quarterback knockdowns in each of the past six seasons while playing for four different teams. In his one year as a full-time starter in 2024, Key racked up 6.5 sacks, 15 knockdowns and 11 tackles for loss. He can be a bit of a freelancer at times as a run defender, which might make him a liability at times on early downs, but Key has able to win one-on-one against tackles and create splash plays. He should be a useful player for 400 snaps in 2026.<\/p>\n

Originally a 2018 3rd round pick of the Raiders<\/a> organization, the 30-year-old Key has been well traveled in his playing career, having later stops with the San Francisco 49ers<\/a> and Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> before most recently, joining the Titans over the last three seasons.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s coming off a solid season for the Colts AFC South divisional rivals where he recorded 22 tackles (9 solo), 6 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, and 33 total QB pressures (via PFF) during 12 games (9 starts) in 2025.<\/p>\n

While it initially looked like Key was signed as a rotational edge off the bench, it now looks like he is the favorite to start opposite Laiatu Latu along the Colts defensive line. The Colts saw a pair of veteran defensive ends, both Kwity Paye (Raiders) and Samson Ebukam<\/a> (Falcons) depart earlier in free agency. Colts versatile veteran defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis also remains unsigned\u2014and the team may want to get younger.<\/p>\n

Along with Key, the Colts also signed defensive end Michael Clemons in free agency, but he projects more as a rotational backup.<\/p>\n

Rather, Key\u2019s primary competition could be Colts\u2019 2025 2nd round pick Jaylahn Tuimoloau, who while endured a clear learning curve as a rookie last year, is hoping to be more consistently productive this upcoming season.<\/p>\n
