{"id":684642,"date":"2026-05-21T18:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T18:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/684642\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T18:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T18:12:10","slug":"construction-on-new-electricity-substation-in-northeast-edmonton-to-begin-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/684642\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction on new electricity substation in northeast Edmonton to begin this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new substation and transmission lines have been approved for Edmonton, which will expand the growing city\u2019s electricity system and capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The multi-year project \u2013 at an approved cost of $398 million \u2013 is being described as one the largest power grid upgrades in Edmonton\u2019s history, according to EPCOR.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on a new high-capacity substation in northeast Edmonton \u2013 on empty land near Fort Road and Yellowhead Highway \u2013 is scheduled to begin this summer and end in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>The project includes five kilometres of new underground high-voltage transmission lines and four km of 72-kV connection lines around the existing Namao Substation.<\/p>\n<p>EPCOR says the existing transmission system in the city\u2019s northeast is approaching its capacity limits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project reinforces, modernizes and adds capacity to Edmonton\u2019s electricity system to make it more resilient in the face of growing demand and hotter summer weather,\u201d said Kirstine Hull, EPCOR\u2019s executive vice-president of electricity services.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of the project will be applied to monthly electricity bills, which are expected to increase by $0.25 at the project\u2019s peak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCosts begin appearing as project components are completed and decline over the infrastructure\u2019s estimated 40-year life,\u201d EPCOR says.<\/p>\n<p>The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) approved EPCOR\u2019s City of Edmonton Transmission Reinforcement (CETR) project following an independent review.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/CETR-2-1024x688.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-739321\" style=\"width:1027px;height:auto\"  \/>A slide on the City of Edmonton Transmission Reinforcement (CETR) project.
