{"id":685614,"date":"2026-05-22T04:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T04:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/685614\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T04:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T04:16:12","slug":"1-month-after-fire-wyndham-crossing-residents-still-without-a-home-or-answers-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/685614\/","title":{"rendered":"1 month after fire, Wyndham Crossing residents still without a home or answers &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fire at the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/wyndham-crossing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wyndham Crossing<\/a> apartment complex in northeast Edmonton on April 20 has displaced more than 200 people.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A month later, residents still don\u2019t know if they\u2019ll ever be able to return home or get their belongings back.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Roe and Wendy Olson met seven months ago when they were each signing a lease for their apartments.<\/p>\n<p>The neighbours were living rough for years and this was supposed to be the start of some stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was super excited because it was my first place, my own place in four years,\u201d Roe said. \u201cThen my daughter moved in shortly after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olson said being displaced leaves you feeling lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am tired, I hardly sleep and I am so stressed,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The fire happened at the other end of the building from their units.<\/p>\n<p>Management has told them there are asbestos concerns and they are not allowed back into the building to retrieve their belongings.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Northeast Edmonton apartment fire sends 1 to hospital, displaces 200 people'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6P-NORTHEAST-APARTMENT.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:54<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNortheast Edmonton apartment fire sends 1 to hospital, displaces 200 people\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Olson said this is devastating, since she paid for storage while she was homeless to keep her stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>She was also in the process of moving and most of her belongings were in boxes, and would likely be unaffected from contamination.<\/p>\n<p>She has received an email that a restoration company can go through her things, but she wouldn\u2019t be able to get them back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am frustrated with the process we are going through here, and they are dragging us through it,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s echoed by Roe.<\/p>\n<p>She said her daughter has sentimental items she would like to keep. Roe is also frustrated that her insurance would cover disposal of her items, but she won\u2019t be able to get them back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe looked over by our balcony and nothing is touched. How do I know there is asbestos on my stuff?\u201d Roe said.<\/p>\n<p>Rob de Pruis of the Insurance Bureau of Canada said when it comes to how apartment buildings are handled, the building insurance and the tenant\u2019s insurance adjusters will talk to each other to deal with contents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTenant\u2019s insurance covers the tenant\u2019s personal contents and their additional living expense for if they have to move out because of a fire, so the removal of those contents would be part of the overall contents limit or the cleaning or remediation of the contents,\u201d de Pruis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have been evacuated, you do have coverage for additional living expenses. These are alternate accommodations, so hotels and meals. So, start an insurance claim right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Roe and Olson, they don\u2019t know what the next day brings.
