Millions of British Columbians in the years and decades ahead, many who will never know his name or story, will benefit from what he helped build, and I think John would be proud of that,” added Mr. Parmar.

The dam became fully operational last year and cost $16 billion, nearly double the original estimate.

Mr. Horgan died in November 2024.

This is the second such dam on the Peace River to be named after a premier. The first is named after W.A.C. Bennett, who championed the province’s hydroelectric expansion in the 1960s.

The reservoir on the Horgan dam, an 83-kilometre-long lake that connects Fort St. John and Hudson’s Hope in northeastern B.C., has been named Naache mege, which means Dreamer Lake, a name chosen by local First Nations to reflect the area’s history and cultural connections.

Sherry Dominic, chief of Blueberry River First Nations, said that in his culture, dreamers “hold a place of highest respect” and play an important role as cultural leaders.

The name of the lake honours the cultural legacy of their people and ensures it will be recognized for generations to come, Dominic in a statement.

The province will take part in a ceremony with First Nations for the naming of the reservoir at a future date.

Mr. Eby said naming the dam after the former premier reflects the nuance and the challenging decisions that confronted Mr. Horgan in his time, and is emblematic of Horgan’s willingness to consider the best interests of B.C. residents.

“This naming reflects the start and the expansion of B.C.’s clean energy chapter, expanding our clean energy advantage as a bulwark against global uncertainty, threats from our American neighbour to the south, and our desire to enhance our competitive advantage to deliver jobs, opportunity, prosperity, and put money in the pockets of British Columbians,” said Mr. Eby.

Open this photo in gallery: John Horgan in Whistler, B.C. in September, 2022.DARRYL DYCK/The Canadian Press Former British…

[22
901,888,902,879,877,903,49,48,876,895,896,891,878,875,46,549,295,894,887,914,880,881,893,889,890,884,904,885,909,910,912,907,911,905,908,882,898,899,714,897,906,66,865,61,900,892,886,883,913
post-685755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-alberta","tag-arts-news","tag-bc","tag-breaking-news","tag-breaking-news-video","tag-british-columbia","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-canada-news","tag-canada-sports","tag-canada-sports-news","tag-canada-trafficcanada-weather","tag-canadian-breaking-news","tag-canadian-news","tag-economy","tag-education","tag-environment","tag-federal-government","tag-foreign-news","tag-globe-and-mail","tag-globe-and-mail-breaking-news","tag-globe-and-mail-canada-news","tag-government","tag-life-news","tag-lifestyle","tag-local-news","tag-manitoba","tag-national-news","tag-new-brunswick","tag-newfoundland-and-labrador","tag-northwest-territories","tag-nova-scotia","tag-nunavut","tag-ontario","tag-pei","tag-photos","tag-political-news","tag-political-opinion","tag-politics","tag-politics-news","tag-quebec","tag-science","tag-sports-news","tag-technology","tag-travel","tag-trudeau","tag-us-news","tag-world-news","tag-yukon
["GET
