{"id":686015,"date":"2026-05-22T08:44:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T08:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/686015\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T08:44:19","slug":"french-anti-bollore-letter-garners-international-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/686015\/","title":{"rendered":"French Anti-Bollor\u00e9 Letter Garners International Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAn open letter, initiated by members of the French cinema world to protest tycoon Vincent Bollor\u00e9\u2019s growing control of France\u2019s media and entertainment sectors, has started to gather international support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOrganisers of the letter entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/time-to-switch-off-bollore\/\" id=\"auto-tag_time-to-switch-off-bollore\" data-tag=\"time-to-switch-off-bollore\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Time To Switch-Off Bollor\u00e9<\/a>\u201d announced a raft of international signatories on Thursday evening, including <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/javier-bardem\/\" id=\"auto-tag_javier-bardem\" data-tag=\"javier-bardem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Javier Bardem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mark-ruffalo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mark-ruffalo\" data-tag=\"mark-ruffalo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Ruffalo<\/a>, Walter Salles, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/ken-loach\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ken-loach\" data-tag=\"ken-loach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Loach<\/a> \u00a0Isabel Coixet, Annemarie Jacir, Hany Abu Assad, Saleh Bakri, Aki Kaurismaki, Yorgos Lanthimos, Indya Moore, Laura Morante and producer Robyn Slovo, who previously worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/canal-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_canal-2\" data-tag=\"canal-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canal+<\/a> subsidiary Studiocanal on \u00a0Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and How To Stop Time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLaunched on the opening night of the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cannes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cannes\" data-tag=\"cannes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes<\/a> Film Festival, the letter took aim at the Canal+ Group\u2019s recent acquisition of a 34% stake in French production, distribution and exhibition major UGC, with an option to buy it outright by 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt warned it marked a new step \u201cin Vincent Bollor\u00e9\u2019s expansion strategy\u201d, suggesting it was part of a larger project to \u201cpush a right-wing, reactionary agenda\u201d in France. Vincent Bollor\u00e9\u2019s Bollor\u00e9 Group is Canal+\u2019s biggest shareholder with a 30% stake..<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe initial 600 signatories hailing from the film world included Juliette Binoche, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cannes-2026\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cannes-2026\" data-tag=\"cannes-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes 2026<\/a> Palme d\u2019Or contenders Arthur Harari and Bertrand Mandico as well as directors Yann Gonzalez, Sepideh Farsi and Jean-Pascal Zadi and actors Ad\u00e8le Haenel, Zita Hanrot, Samuel Kircher, Ariane Labed, Anna Mouglalis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe international support comes just days after Maxime Saada, Canal+ Chair and CEO hit back at the open letter saying his group would no longer work with its signatories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe letter has sparked a mixed response from French professionals. While there is widespread sympathy for the concerns it raises, some hold that there are no signs of political interference in Canal+\u2019s cinema activities as yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn the backdrop, Deadline hears some producers are furious about the timing of letter which has dropped while independent producer syndicates are in negotiations with Canal+ over its future cinema spending plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCanal+ is France\u2019s biggest non-state cinema funder.
