U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> called late-night host Stephen Colbert<\/a> \u201cno talent\u201d after the final broadcast of The Late Show aired on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cColbert is finally finished at CBS. Amazing that he lasted so long!\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social<\/a> on Thursday night. \u201cNo talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he\u2019s finally gone!\u201d<\/p>\n

In a followup post on Friday<\/a>, Trump said Colbert\u2019s \u201cfiring from CBS was the \u2018Beginning of the End\u2019 for untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated Late Television Hosts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOthers, of even less talent, to soon follow. May they all Rest in Peace,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Thursday, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Global News that Colbert<\/a> \u201cis a pathetic trainwreck with no talent and terrible ratings, which is exactly why CBS cancelled his show and is booting him off the airwaves.\u201d<\/p>\n

During Colbert\u2019s final episode of\u00a0The Late Show, he did not mention Trump\u2019s name once and the show took a non-political route, with the 62-year-old comic celebrating his 11 seasons instead.<\/p>\n

At the top of his last show, Colbert highlighted the \u201cjoy\u201d he and his team felt creating more than 1,800 episodes of The Late Show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe energy that you\u2019ve given us, we sincerely need that to have done the best possible show we could have for you for the last 11 years,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cYou\u2019ve given it to us. We\u2019ve given it all right back to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his final interview on the farewell episode<\/a>, Colbert was joined by Beatles singer Paul McCartney<\/a>, who spoke about his first time on U.S. television at the Ed Sullivan Theater, where The Late Show\u00a0is filmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you remember about February of \u201964?\u201d Colbert asked McCartney.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019d never been to America. We\u2019d come here and people said this was the biggest show, and to tell you the truth, we\u2019d never heard of it,\u201d McCartney replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came here and you have to go a few floors down to get to makeup,\u201d McCartney continued. \u201cWe went down there and the girls put makeup on us, and it was, like, bright orange.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s very popular in certain circles these days. You\u2019d fit nicely in,\u201d Colbert said.<\/p>\n

Colbert asked McCartney if he and the other members of the Beatles were nervous coming on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were a little bit nervous, but we\u2019re young kids and we\u2019re sort of full of ourselves,\u201d McCartney responded. \u201cIt was very exciting. America\u2019s where all the music we loved came from \u2014 rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, the blues and the whole thing, even going back to Fred Astaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCartney also gifted Colbert a framed photo of the Beatles onstage during their first performance at the Ed Sullivan Theater.<\/p>\n

McCartney and Colbert closed out his final show by singing the Beatles\u2019\u00a0Hello Goodbye, accompanied by Elvis Costello<\/a>, band leader Louis Cato and former band leader Jon Batiste.<\/p>\n

Thursday night\u2019s episode was also full of surprise cameos from Ryan Reynolds<\/a>, Paul Rudd<\/a>, Bryan Cranston, Andy Cohen<\/a>, Tim Meadows and more.<\/p>\n

During the farewell episode, Colbert encountered an interdimensional wormhole that astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson<\/a> helpfully explained was opened because a top-rated show could also have been cancelled.<\/p>\n

Jon Stewart<\/a> made an appearance<\/a>, explaining the wormhole was a metaphor, and Colbert reunited with his fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>, Jimmy Fallon<\/a>, John Oliver<\/a> and Seth Meyers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came to say we\u2019re going to miss you. Late night is not going to be the same without you,\u201d Kimmel told Colbert.<\/p>\n

Kimmel\u00a0announced \u201ca quick programming note\u201d<\/a> during Wednesday\u2019s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/p>\n

Kimmel said his show would go dark on Thursday \u201cout of respect for our colleague and friend, Stephen Colbert, and the writers, producers, staff and crew at The Late Show, whose final show on CBS airs opposite ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fallon closed Wednesday\u2019s Tonight Show\u00a0with a message to Colbert, saying, \u201cStephen, have a great show tomorrow. We\u2019ll be watching. Good night, everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday night, David Letterman<\/a>, who hosted\u00a0The Late Show\u00a0from 1993 until 2015, joined Colbert on the roof of the theatre to hurl furniture from the set \u2014 a nod to one of Letterman\u2019s classic stunts.<\/p>\n

Letterman also spoke about the end of the series, calling it a \u201chuge mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shared\u00a0his thoughts on the\u00a0Today\u00a0show<\/a> and said the show\u2019s cancellation \u201ckind of makes me sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always relied on, you would read the newspaper in the morning, and at night you would see Johnny Carson. And Johnny would give you a perspective, whether you agreed with it or not, but it was always funny,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd without that, I think we\u2019re losing a valuable perspective. I think it\u2019s very, very important to the American culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s too bad that Stephen is gone,\u201d Letterman told Today\u00a0co-anchor Craig Melvin. \u201cI think it\u2019s a huge mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert\u00a0shared the news of\u00a0The Late Show\u2019s cancellation with his audience last July<\/a>, saying he learned that after a decade on air, \u201cnext year will be our last season.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe network will be ending The Late Show in May,\u201d Colbert said as the crowd erupted in boos. \u201cYeah, I share your feelings. It\u2019s not just the end of our show but it\u2019s the end of The Late Show on CBS.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert said he was not being replaced as host and that the entire show \u201cis just going away.\u201d<\/p>\n
