Two women became sick and required medical attention after their drinks were possibly tampered with in separate incidents earlier this month, Halifax Regional Police said Friday.

In a news release, police said the incidents occurred May 17 and in both cases, the women showed signs of impairment after reportedly only drinking a little bit of alcohol.

Police said the incidents happened at different locations and don’t appear to be related. They did not provide the names of the establishments or the specific area of Halifax where the incidents took place.

Police said the incidents had yet to be confirmed by medical analysis, but they are investigating whether the drinks were tampered with.

“Police are reminding people not to leave drinks unattended and are encouraging bar staff, patrons, friends and family members to look out for one another,” the release said.

It is a criminal offence to administer a drug to someone without their knowledge or consent, police added.

It can take between five and 30 minutes after drinking for the effects of a tampered drink to be felt, police said. The effects can sometimes last up to 12 hours.

Common symptoms could include:

Dizziness.Drowsiness.Confusion.Difficulty walking.Nausea/vomiting.Blurred vision.Memory loss.Unconsciousness/passing out.Difficulty breathing.

Police said to call 911 if you or someone else is experiencing these symptoms and believe a drink was tampered with.
