The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) says its rescue season has officially started with the admission of its first harbour seal pup, which was found “emaciated and alone” under a BC Ferries ramp in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii.

The pup is believed to be less than five days old and was brought to the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre on May 19 in critical condition.

VAMMR says the male pup, named Sdlaana – which means “survivor” in the Haida language – was found “severely underweight, indicating he had likely been without his mother for an extended period.”

Local volunteers worked with VAMMR and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to transport the animal from the coastal island to Vancouver, where it now receives emergency veterinary care.

“The pup arrived in critical condition after a long journey and received immediate treatment upon admission,” said Lindsaye Akhurst, VAMMR senior manager. “Right now, our team is focused on stabilizing him, keeping him comfortable and giving him the time and care he needs to rest and recover.”

A video shows Sdlaana squeaking next to a stuffed animal that’s larger than him at the Vancouver rescue centre.

The rescue society is reminding British Columbians that summer is seal pupping season, and that people may spot pups resting alone on shore.

“In most cases, the pup is not abandoned, but it’s important to know how to respond in a way that protects both the animal and your own safety,” said VAMMR in a release Friday.

For more tips on what to do if you see a seal pup, VAMMR has created a video that outlines best practices.

Tips include staying away from the animal, making sure pets and people do not touch it, and waiting to see if its mom returns. If you are concerned about the animal’s health you can contact VAMMR at 604-258-7325 with information like where you are, what the pup looks like, and if possible, take a photo to send.

If you see someone interfering with wildlife, like seal pups, you can contact Fisheries and Oceans Canada at 1-800-465-4336.

Meanwhile, VAMMR has set up an online fundraiser for Sdlaana’s care. A group of donors have set up a matching donation program up to $8,000 for the seal pup’s treatment.

“The summer always brings an influx of patients needing urgent care,” said Akhurst. “Support from the public helps ensure we are prepared to respond whenever those calls come in.”
