A 911 caller reported he was short of breath and coughing up blood. His death has left the racing community stunned. Busch’s NASCAR career brought him to Wisconsin several times, including an appearance at the Milwaukee Mile in 2009. Scott Mayer, a former IndyCar driver from Franklin, said his 22-year-old son, NASCAR driver Sam Mayer, raced against Busch numerous times. “Kyle was a little bit of a mentor, but more of a competitor,” Scott Mayer said. Mayer described Busch as intensely focused on winning.”Outside the track, he was a normal, nice guy, but at the track, he just literally bled competition. He was so inspired by wanting to win and do good that he was just focused on that. He didn’t care about anybody or anything else,” Mayer said. The news of Busch’s death has deeply affected the racing community.”Sam is taken aback by this,” Mayer said. “For somebody like Kyle, being a 41-year-old professional racecar driver, dying outside of a racecar, it has stunned everybody in the racing world.” Mayer also said the racing community, primarily concentrated in Charlotte, North Carolina, will come together to support Busch’s family. Much of the attention is on Busch’s young son, who is just beginning his own racing career. “Following his daddy’s footsteps. They had planned on him making it to NASCAR,” Mayer said. Reflecting on his own relationship with his son, Mayer added, “I’ve helped him ever since he was a four-year-old go-kart driver, all the way up to where he is today. Nobody understands that other than a father and son who have raced together.” This weekend’s major racing events, including NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte and the Indy 500, are expected to feature tributes to Busch. Sam Mayer shared his reaction on social media, writing, “He taught me a lot. Thank you, Kyle.
