{"id":690117,"date":"2026-05-24T06:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T06:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/690117\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T06:48:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T06:48:08","slug":"man-charged-with-91-offenses-after-allegedly-stealing-almost-18000-in-goods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/690117\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged with 91 offenses after allegedly stealing almost $18,000 in goods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A 44-year-old man is facing 91 charges after allegedly stealing nearly $18,000 worth of goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In May 2025, Toronto police launched an investigation called Project Shelf Defense following a spike in retail thefts in 11 Division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Investigators said the aim of this investigation was to \u201cidentify repeat offenders and retail theft trends, link related investigations, and prevent further offences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe project has resulted in numerous arrests and has helped remove repeat offenders from the community,\u201d police said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On May 21, they identified and arrested Joanny Portillo Martinez, 44, of no fixed address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He has been charged with one count of assault and 45 counts each of theft under $5,000 and fail to comply with probation. The charges have not been tested in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Martinez is scheduled to appear in bail court on May 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police allege between March 2 and May 21, he committed $17,553.31 worth of thefts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This investigation is ongoing and anyone with further information is asked to contact Toronto police at 416-808-1100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A 44-year-old man is facing 91 charges after allegedly stealing nearly $18,000 worth of goods.
