When I was five or six, my mom got me the VHS of The Little Mermaid, and I would watch it over and over again. I was obsessed with the moment Ariel sings Part of Your World. There was something about wanting more, wanting a different life \u2013 even as a kid, I felt that.<\/p>\n

I remember going to a\u00a0record store in Times Square, New York and my aunt buying me What a\u00a0Girl Wants by Christina Aguilera on cassette tape and\u00a0it was really exciting. Then the first CD that I\u00a0bought myself was Just\u00a0Dance by Lady Gaga which felt like a\u00a0real moment of independence.<\/p>\n

Ready Or Not by Fugees. I love doing all of Lauryn\u2019s parts, although I don\u2019t remember learning it, I just know it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

At Last by Etta James, because it\u2019s so iconic, you can really go for it. Or, depending on my mood,No Scrubs by\u00a0TLC, because everyone starts singing and it goes off.<\/p>\n

New Religion by me. I mean, I have to say it! It\u2019s made for that energy.<\/p>\n
The song that gets me up in the morning
Honestly? It\u2019s the sound of my dog, Bear, barking. She\u2019ll sit in the studio for hours, she comes on tour with me, and even when everything\u2019s insanely loud, she just sleeps through it. But in the morning? No chance.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The song that changed my life
As a songwriter, I\u2019m sceptical about sample-based songs. When Insomnia by Faithless got cleared for New Religion, I was shocked. I even had brunch with Sister Bliss and asked if she could send the files, and she said: \u201cMy lovely, they\u2019re on tape.\u201d There\u2019s something about the way music was recorded back then that gives it a warmth you can\u2019t fake.<\/p>\n

Trampoline by Shaed because it was one \u201cour\u201d songs with my ex. Even though I love it to death, I just can\u2019t go back there.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Growing up, you couldn\u2019t play songs like Livin\u2019 on a Prayer by Bon Jovi \u2013 that\u2019s what our parents would listen to. But now I think that\u2019s bullshit \u2013 it\u2019s the perfect song to play at full volume.<\/p>\n

Songs hit you differently depending on where you are in your life. Right now, Easy on Me by Adele really gets me. There\u2019s something so raw about it \u2013 it just opens you up.<\/p>\n
