Aftermath of a collision in the Transcona area in the early hours of Sunday. (Cliff Simpson, CityNews)<\/p>\nA serious crash took place around 2 a.m. on a residential street in the Transcona area. Residents say they are not surprised, as they\u2019ve been sounding an alarm about the speeding issue in the area for a while now.<\/p>\n
Police and paramedics were first to arrive at the scene of the car crash in the area of Murdoch Mackay School. At 2:08 a.m. STARS ambulance helicopter transported a male driver to the hospital in critical condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we live around the corner, and first thing this morning, my daughter woke up, and she\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my god, Mom, there was an accident in front of c pet and there was STARS,\u2019 like that\u2019s the part that really is alarming everybody, that it was an accident so bad that stars had to come inside the city to respond. So she said that her dog heard the accident and woke them all up, and they saw STARS come in, and they were attending to somebody on the street, apparently, so the speed is atrocious, like we live on that street back there, and it\u2019s a throwaway. I can\u2019t believe that nothing has happened on our street too, but here, like I said multiple times, there\u2019s been cars come off of Victoria and land in that front yard,\u201d Tracy Hoborough, a nearby resident, explained.<\/p>\n
Pamela Heaphy, another nearby resident, said, \u201cI heard the sirens and heard the helicopter come in, the stars. I was waiting up for my one son to get home, the last one. So, he was home, and then it was a few minutes after that, I heard everything. There\u2019s always speeding. Obviously not to this extent, I don\u2019t think. It\u2019s more because you have kind of a bend in the road, so there\u2019s a little bit of thrill there. You\u2019ve got a long space between stop signs, which is not very common in Transcona, and so yeah, you do get speeders, but not enough to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Winnipeg police say the incident is currently being investigated by the traffic division. Redonda Street had been closed for investigators to process the scene, but has now been reopened to traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just hope people start to realize that it\u2019s not just you you\u2019re hurting, it\u2019s everybody else around. You know, like I was saying, my first instinct was where my kids, and then I\u2019m going to my friend\u2019s kids, \u2018Ok, that\u2019s their car.\u2019 You know, then you\u2019re kind of counting them out, so I think that\u2019s kind of a big message, just be smart when you\u2019re making these decisions,\u201d said Heaphy.<\/p>\n
