A long and distinguished career on Centre Court has been brought to life through personal memories, behind-the-scenes stories and a wardrobe full of memories.<\/p>\n
At the Wargrave Local History Society’s May meeting, member Julia Freeman spoke about her time as a tennis umpire at Wimbledon and on the international circuit.<\/p>\n

Her talk was accompanied by photographs and a display of the official uniforms she wore during her career on the courts.<\/p>\n
Mrs Freeman explained how she applied to the Lawn Tennis Association for umpire training after returning to England from living in Bangkok, and qualified in 1992.<\/p>\n
She began umpiring at Wimbledon two years later and went on to work at tournaments around the world.<\/p>\n

Her talk included reflections on the practical ‘dull green’ umpire uniforms, which were replaced every five years.<\/p>\n
Mrs Freeman also shared stories of some of the iconic matches and players she witnessed up close.<\/p>\n
She said that in 2001 she was selected to officiate at the Ladies\u2019 Final.<\/p>\n
However, due to weather delays, her team was instead called onto Centre Court for the Men\u2019s Semi-Final between Tim Henman and Goran Ivani\u0161evi\u0107.<\/p>\n
Recalling the match, Mrs Freeman said Mr Henman did not like her call against him.<\/p>\n
