In reality, McDonald\u2019s has its place. <\/p>\n<p>Ahead, nine nutritionists shared whether they let their kids eat McDonald\u2019s, plus when and why.<\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2014 but she mainly focuses on home-cooked meals<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racheltrotta.com\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Rachel Trotta\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"http:\/\/www.racheltrotta.com\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Trotta<\/a>, a fitness nutrition specialist and personal trainer, said her approach is \u201cnot necessarily a \u2018let\u2019 situation,\u201d but focused on shaping healthy attitudes toward food and not setting food \u201crules.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She stocks the house with whole foods, cooks most meals at home and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/fresh-fruit-produce-container_l_66a13fb1e4b08943f2a20dee\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"brings fruit\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66a13fb1e4b08943f2a20dee\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brings fruit<\/a> for on-the-go snacks. At the same time, she doesn\u2019t believe in being full-out anti-McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that occasionally having fast food (without negative commentary) keeps it in perspective instead of blowing it out of proportion,\u201d Trotta said.<\/p>\n<p>Her 5-year-old daughter has actually never had McDonald\u2019s, but not because it\u2019s forbidden, she clarified. Again, Trotta\u2019s focus is on helping her daughter shape a healthy relationship with food. This looks like encouraging her to listen to her body, such as eating when she\u2019s hungry and stopping when she\u2019s full. That is what sets her daughter up well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know when she does have the opportunity to eat more fast food, she\u2019ll be able to trust her own internal compass,\u201d Trotta said.<\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2014 in a flexible way and without moralizing it <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingrecoverycenter.com\/profile\/julia-cassidy\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Julia Cassidy\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.eatingrecoverycenter.com\/profile\/julia-cassidy\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Cassidy<\/a>, a dietitian and eating disorder specialist with Eating Recovery Center, believes that food is just food; it doesn\u2019t need moral judgment. Further, she said labeling certain foods as \u201coff limits\u201d or \u201cjunk\u201d can set kids up for shame, secrecy or an unhealthy relationship with eating. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t view McDonald\u2019s \u2014 or any food \u2014 as \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cMy sons eat at McDonald\u2019s sometimes, and I treat it the same way I would at any other meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A McDonald\u2019s meal can have many legitimate purposes, too. For Cassidy, it\u2019s been about convenience, genuinely enjoying the food, or a family tradition, like a chicken nugget meal on the way to a ballgame.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Trotta, she doesn\u2019t make a big deal about a McDonald\u2019s meal and focuses on modeling balance. Some meals are McDonald\u2019s, and some meals are home-cooked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the long run, this approach supports food flexibility, reduces guilt and protects against the kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/orthorexia-is-more-and-more-common-heres-what-you-should-know-about-it-goog_l_683887bfe4b06202aa9171cc\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"rigid thinking that can contribute to disordered eating\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" said, I don\u2019t go out of my way to get fast food of any kind for my kids,\u201d she added. \u201cI believe in providing as much real, homemade food as possible and reserving fast food for special occasions or for days when our schedule absolutely demands it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2014 but rarely, and more in social situations <\/p>\n<p><a food, though \u2014 that\u2019s not helpful. \u201cRather than creating restrictions that might foster an unhealthy relationship with food, as a family, we focus on education and choices,\u201d Marogy said. \u201cOur approach centers on teaching about nutrient-dense foods so he can understand how and which foods best support his growing body.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Marogy sometimes cooks alternatives, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/homemade-burger-recipe-no-grill_l_62853ee2e4b0c2dce6583821\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"homemade burgers\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" the same way I would at any other meal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Physical health is not the only important type of health to consider here, though \u2014 social health is important, too. And for many people and cultures, that includes certain foods and eating rituals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial eating experiences are valuable for children\u2019s development,\u201d Marogy said. \u201cFood anxiety shouldn\u2019t overshadow these important moments with friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marogy also acknowledged that not every family has the same privileges. \u201cI appreciate that every family\u2019s circumstances are different, and some need to rely on fast food due to economic or time constraints,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2014 once in a while and as a balanced meal<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heidimcindoord.com\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Heidi McIndoo\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/heidimcindoord.com\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heidi McIndoo<\/a> is a registered dietitian in Boston at FoodieMomRD. \u201cI would and have let my kids eat McDonald\u2019s for many reasons,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her main reason acknowledges the psychological piece and how it can affect a child\u2019s well-being. \u201cWhen you completely ban food from your kids, you\u2019re just making those foods more appealing to them,\u201d she said. \u201cIt also encourages the mentality of \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 foods, which can lead to issues with healthy eating as they get older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called McDonald\u2019s a \u201conce in a while food\u201d and said it is a common go-to on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/the-healthiest-road-trip-snacks-to-pack-according-to-nutritionists_l_672a4d80e4b05debb72c44c1\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"road trips\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"689a23a0e4b0c2e59a932ef8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"672a4d80e4b05debb72c44c1\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">road trips<\/a> when it is often the only choice. <\/p>\n<p>Then, when at McDonald\u2019s, she tries to balance the meal. For starters, she said, it\u2019s easily accessible, affordable and convenient. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf accessible food options did not exist, it would make it more difficult for people to nourish themselves and their families,\u201d Fata said.<\/p>\n<p>On that note, she added that McDonald\u2019s can even be nutritious. (Yes, you read that right!) <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s a Big Mac, french fry, chicken nugget or McFlurry, each one of these options contains <a
