Just 24 hours later, he made a surprise appearance on the Only in Monroe public access TV show in Michigan. The episode included celebrity guests like Jeff Daniels <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/stephen-colbert-already-lands-new-hosting-gig-on-michigan-public-access-2000698949\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and quickly went viral<\/a>. Then CBS started issuing copyright strikes against accounts sharing the episode online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParamount is apparently trying to suppress copies of \u2018Only in Monroe\u2019 from appearing on other social platforms by filing frivolous copyright notices, even though the show was produced by a public access TV channel and doesn\u2019t use their intellectual property\u2026,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MatthewKeysLive\/status\/2058567331992023172\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> independent journalist Matthew Keyes, whose re-post of the show on X had gone viral. Other accounts started sharing similar screenshots of copyright strikes from Paramount, leading many to bemoan the fact that CBS had seemingly canceled Colbert\u2019s show to appease Trump only to continue antagonizing him after his final Late Show appearance.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Paramount claiming ownership of a Public Access show in Michigan is wild work. <\/p>\n<p>We re-shared Colbert\u2019s public access show with our audience yesterday, made sure to point everyone back to Monroe Community Media \u2014 and CBS blocked the entire thing?! Insanity. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaydayNetwork?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@MaydayNetwork<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/H61gyvkUxT\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/H61gyvkUxT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michelle Kinney (@MichelleKinney) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichelleKinney\/status\/2058573197574869337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 24, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The network has since gone public to make it clear that that wasn\u2019t what was going on. \u201cStephen Colbert\u2019s return to Monroe in the \u2018Only in Monroe\u2019 episode was financed and produced by CBS Studios and was posted on Stephen Colbert\u2019s YouTube channel in collaboration with Monroe Community Media and \u2018The Late Show\u2019s\u2019 YouTube channels,\u201d a CBS spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/cbs-stephen-colbert-only-in-monroe-public-access-show-1236758093\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Variety<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The continued, \u201cAs is our regular practice, we send copyright notices to unauthorized websites that post copyrighted content from CBS and our network\/studio talent such as Stephen Colbert. However, for this episode, we have decided to waive further enforcement of this standard industry practice until additional review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colbert used \u201cOnly in Monroe\u201d to launch his Late Show back in 2015, so it was an obvious place to bring that journey full circle.
