With Frederik Andersen untested in his own end, Jakub Dobes did what he could to push the Canadiens past regulation. He made 35 saves. It\u2019s his first loss after a loss in these playoffs.<\/p>\n
Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-winner at 14:06 of the extra frame.<\/p>\n
The Canadiens were perhaps looking to send a message by bestowing 1986 Cup winner Claude Lemieux the honour of carrying the torch into the Bell Centre. After getting badly outhit in Games 1 and 2, things were a little more even this time, with the Canes winning on the hit counter 37-31.<\/p>\n
But the start remained the same, with the Habs allowing the game\u2019s first goal, this time to a wide open Shayne Gostisbehere.<\/p>\n
But the Habs drew even in the back half of the period. Mike Matheson\u2019s shot from the high slot beat Andersen to put the home team on the board.<\/p>\n
The Canes regained the lead less than a minute later, with Taylor Hall jumping on the puck in front of the crease. The Habs were outshot 15-5 in the first period.<\/p>\n
Montreal went 1-for-2 on the power play in a game where the whistles were mostly kept away. Cole Caufield set up Lane Hutson for the lone goal of the second period.<\/p>\n
Like Beck Malentstyn before him, Carolina\u2019s Sean Walker tried to get Dobes off his game by running him over. The Bell Centre faithful were dismayed by the fact that Jake Evans also got two minutes for retaliating.<\/p>\n
In the third period, the Habs looked like they\u2019d pulled ahead. Noah Dobson thought he scored his first of the playoffs, but Hurricanes coach Rod Brind\u2019Amour successfully challenged that Cole Caufield was offside on the zone entry.<\/p>\n
With the game tied, Jakub Dobes held down the fort with a pair of spectacular saves. <\/p>\n
The Canadiens actually started overtime with momentum, but captain Nick Suzuki missed the net on his breakaway opportunity. That was followed by a Mike Matheson shot off the crossbar.<\/p>\n
On the overtime goal, Hutson gave the puck away on the zone exit, and after taking a knee in the previous game late by Hall, the Canadiens defenceman was unable to exact his revenge. Did he also take an elbow from William Carrier just before the game-winner?<\/p>\n
It\u2019s simple for the Canadiens at this point: they won\u2019t be able to climb back into this series unless they shoot more. Being selective has worked in their favour all season, but against a Carolina Hurricanes team that withholds chances, the Habs have no choice but to spray and pray.<\/p>\n
For as good as Carolina has looked, their netminder has given up four goals on 25 shots in two wins. Getting more rubber on Andersen is how the Habs can prolong their season.<\/p>\n
Kaiden Guhle drew two penalties on the night. Joe Veleno replaced Oliver Kapanen in the lineup, but only Kirby Dach played less. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s still just 2-1 in the series, but the liveblog commenters<\/a> were unsure if the Habs can bounce back after watching the Hurricanes win two nearly identical games.
